Ignore this if you like but I'm just about tired of hearing about black dots when you look at a 400% high-ISO blown pinpoint highlights, red bloomers in the viewfinder on the 6 o'clock focus indicator (which stays on a whole 200 milliseconds or so) and now it squeeks when I squeeze the crap out of it tales of woe. JEEEZ-ZUS is anyone besides me using the damn thing to take photographs? It's an amazingly capable camera folks - quit picking the nits off it.
Well, I have an update to my remarks above much sooner than I expected. I was changing lenses and left the 5D II sitting on top of the tripod w/o the QR engaged and w/o the body cap on (I'm an idiot). Went to grab it and it toppled over landing with a bang on the hardwood floor. I'd estimate it was a 3-4 foot drop. I got that hot face feeling I get when I do something really stupid. Picked it up, looked it over, gave it a shake. Rubbed off some dust marks. Not a scratch, not a rattle, fully operational. It definitely gave me that "built like a tank" feeling. Hope no one else finds out the hard way just how good the 5D II's build quality is .
it's not the pod that he had it on. putting it on the monopod was the only way he could keep the video still and not shaky.
i've tried this first hand without the monopod and there really is something wrong with his. it's sent back to canon already. i'll update everyone when it comes back.

i'm sure it's amazingly capable when your's doesn't squeak and everything is working fine and dandy. for some, the structural integrity of their camera body is important if they want a long-lasting positive experience. for $2699, all they're expecting is a camera body not to squeak everytime they hold the grip. it's pretty clear that most everyone's experience has been pretty positive so far. can't he expect the same? i think the only one that needs to relax here is you.
in regards to the black dots... if people want to pixel peep then fine, let them be. why do you have to personally make it your vendetta to point out to people your photography-shooting-holy-crusade? i personally don't care if i get black dots or not. BUT if it's something that canon HAS officially recognized as an issue and plans a firmware update to repair it, then perhaps you should ignore the update since your's is beyond capable.
the purpose of this thread was to see if there was a widespread issue with the integrity of the newly redesigned casing. if his camera body ever progressed into an issue where the cf door cracked off or if the battery hinge broke off, wouldn't it be wiser to just nip it in the bud before it got worse? I (we) have personally witnessed two of these issues within my circle of correspondences within the second week of ownership and it seems that there was one other who posted here and didn't care. But for the most part, we haven't seen anything widespread which now tells me that these are just isolated situations.
+1 Some people don't deserve the newest technology.
I'm going to make a lot of money with this camera, regardless of all these little nit-picking things.

Nahhh - you have the crusade part backwards. People get the camera and instead of using it to actually take pictures they try their very best to find something to bitch about. I guess some people are just doomed to be unhappy campers. Take the squeaky grip. Have you looked at the breakdown of the 5D MkII chassis? There isn't a thing to flex in the grip - except the CF door. I dunno how loud it is or even how hard you have to squeeze to get it to perform that way. So send it back and get one that doesn't do that. Statistically speaking - shit happens. So you drew the unlucky number. At least you can *do* something about it. Would I be happy about it? No. Would I get on the boards and rant and rave about how crappy Canon QC is? No. In my circle of acquaintances not one person has had any issue whatsoever with their Canon gear. I dunno anyone else with the MkII yet so I can't comment on that one. But anyway - it just seems like there's folks that look for trouble and then try to get the villagers up in arms. The original 5D got the same treatment. Dusty viewfinders, dust on the sensors, 100-400 pumped air out of the eyepiece, etc etc etc. Now after 3 years folks wax poetic about it. It is a damn fine camera - so why all the beefing when it first came out? Don't even get me started on the whole "sharp copy" lens rants and raves. You ever see the graphic depiction of an iceberg? There's a little tip sticking out and a massive amount of ice under the water. The people with issues are that tiny tip and the vast majority of satisfied customers is that big chunk underneath. Anyway - I'll get off my soapbox...

Lets make things clear, when I got the camera, it exceeded my expectations. During the first event I shot, the image quality was amazing and I did not notice any black dot problem. But after a 3 month pre-order, it's disappointing to get a 2700 dollar camera that creaked more than a 600 dollar XTi or 1100 dollar 40D. When I made the video, I was almost sure I just had a bad copy and wanted to have some evidence in case they asked what was wrong.
It didn't take a lot of pressure to get it to creak, even if I placed it on the table it would make that noise, although it was not as loud if I had the grip on it. I didn't expect this to be a widespread issue. Putting the video up here was not a question of Canon's QC, but just a way to ask others if they were experiencing a similar problem.

I worked hard to save up and pay for this camera, so who are you to say I don't deserve this camera. If the replacement camera comes and has the same problem then I'll send it back again and just get a 1D III. It shouldn't be my problem that a product doesn't work like it should.

i agree that there will be those folks that come on here an b*tch and complain about anything and everything. i'm just wondering how you got the sense that that was my intent in the original post. there's no doubt that this is an amazing camera. i believe this one single camera, imho, will change the entire industry of professional wedding photography. it has definitely opened the doors to new ideas with video capture and be able to give us resolutions only 1ds owners were able to enjoy. i've got two of them coming my way to enhance my business and i intend to beat these down like i did my previous bodies. between my second photog (owner of said 5dmk2) and i, we'll be doing over 50 events in 09. these babies aren't sitting on a shelf, rest assured.
our intent was to post in this forum to see if anyone else was experiencing the same "symptom". this is a forum where people post questions, ideas, and express opinions and share their expertise, right? was there any harm in posting a general concern here without getting your typical e-thuggery comment like yours? "i'm sick of this and i'm sick of that..." don't post if it bothers you that much. you should be out there shooting anyway, right? are you even an owner of the 5dmk2?
as for the design of camera body.. trust me. i've taken apart my 5d's, 20/30/40d's, and 1d's. if you were able to see the video, he was just squeezing the rubber in the front and it would creak. believe me.. IT'S LOUD. when he first showed it to me, i was standing a good 3-5 feet away from him and amongst Cermak and Archer traffic, I was still able to hear it. statistically, your right, there are a few bad apples and he happened to get this one. how else would we know if we didn't ask a simple question on this forum? now we know and let's leave it at that. i even asked him if it was really that necessary to send it in and part with it, being that he waited so long. but it's winter here in chicago.... things get slow.. might as well do it now and just be done with it.
again..
intent = owners... chime in if yours is doing this also...
yes? ok.. maybe it's a normal.
no? ok.. might as well send it back and be done
I said "some", I didn't point you out directly nor the original poster.

I received my 5D II yesterday and I have a lot of problems with it.
A. Body
1. The cameras repeatedly loose some of the settings I’ve made.
2. Sometimes when I press the play button the image appear on the screen for a fraction of a second and disappear.
B. Body + 580EX II (tried also in combination with 430EX II)
1. Sometimes when the play button is pressed the flash start to fire + the same problem I noticed when the flash is not attached
2. Occasionally when I use the 580EX as a master and the 430 as slave both flashes start to fire with no reason
3. And now none of the flash don’t fire (I’ve tried various combination without any result) the funny thing is that even in the menu «External Speedlite control» the flash appear to be ok I have no fire at all, anyway sometimes in the same menu when I try to access the «Flash function settings» I get the message “This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash’s power is turned off.” (I assure all that is not the case ).
Unfortunately I will be able to go to the retailer after Christmas and hopefully change it.
I face the same Body problem as razvanv with my 5D II.
2. Sometimes when I press the play button the image appear on the screen for a fraction of a second and disappear.
This also sometimes happens to the Menu button.
This happens quite frequently - it seems that the camera was busy doing something (I can hear it doing something), and I have to patiently wait for 3-5 seconds for the camera to finish doing its things (i.e. no more sound), before the buttons will work again.

Of course people are entitled to talk about problems that shouldn't be there. If you don't like reading about these things why even open the thread? Incredibly rude and self righteous of you.
