now it looks like people are starting to understand why we had to post this. it was bothering us that much!! anyways, the owner, mike, just got his camera shipped back from the return/exchange. we'll see what happens.

After watching that video and if you haven`t added any sound effects( I`m sure you haven`t) I can understand why you are upset, if mine was like that then I would return it. I think that maybe some packing has been left out.
Dave
no sound effects were added. it is actually louder in person. we all know the microphone on this badboy isn't exactly the greatest.
Well I can repeat that neither my original 5D nor 20D make any such noise, even if I put unrealistic amounts of pressure in this area.
This isn't evidence of weak construction, probably just poor CQ on this one. Of course it needs to be returned.
One side note, as you can hear every motion the hand makes it is clear that the mic is amplifying the effect. But granted it is irritating. OTOH, if you move your hands on a regular camcorder you hear amplified noise as well (not the creaking, although I wouldn;t start pressing on a camcorder parts while filming either...
Thanks for putting the video on the blog for easy access though.
My 5Dm2 memory card door squeeks towards the lower edge.
and
I was reviewing shots and the thing just shut off a couple of times as if the battery lost connection. I have the battery grip. I'm trying to duplicate the problem.
The performance of this camera is wonderful but the loose CF (memory card) door drives me crazy! I believe this is a bigger issue when using heavy L lens.
I used the fabric side of black Velcro pads cut into very thin strips and attached to a few places on CF door and on one side of battery door. Experimented a bit but finally ended up with a solid feel with no interference to door movement.
This issue bugs me so much I had considered returning the camera selling off my entire lens collection and switching brands but reconsidered at the last minute and decided to stay with Canon but if this issue is not resolved on next upgrade it will not be a Canon. The old 5D had the same problem.
I think it is embarrassing to Canon to have such an issue, no one should be complaining about anything loose on their camera, but that’s only my 2 cents.

As it happens my 5d2 is really solid to feel. If (like you) I had a creek then I would do as you have done. Over the years I`ve made small addons or adjustments to all sorts of camera gear and generally landed up with a slightly better product.
I think the problem with the 5D2 CF door is that the small amount of weather seal that is probably stuck in manually isn`t always put in the correct position.
It`s a bloody shame that people are having to do these sort of things on a new camera but I suppose it`s the sign of the times. For sure it`s worth getting comfortable with this camera because it is very good when everything falls in line. anyone thinking of buying one then don`t be put of because (coming from a 1dsmk3 user) it really does produce super images to match the 1 series.(slightly better as far as DR and noise IMHO)
I completely agree, this is a great camera except for this issue and that’s why I did not make the switch! I love using it and love the results. Now with my little modification nothing feels as good in my hands.
Like you I do not give up easy on a product I like and will modify it if I need to, that said, unfortunately a good number of us must be heard in order for manufactures to identify the problem and then care enough to correct it.
Hopefully, Canon will hear us and improve the product for all of us to enjoy without modifications because some may not be so handy and do more damage then good.
the 5D2 card door "creaks" on mine. my 40D didn't do this, and my 20D didn't do this.
it's just a mental rub i suppose, but it would be like if i bought a new sports car and something kept rattling when i drove it. the rattling wouldn't give me that 'quality' sort of feeling.
when i moved up to the xxD line from the drebel line, i felt the build quality upgrade. when i moved from the 40D to the 5D2, there was actually a step backwards in the build quality feel. the shutter button is squashy in comparison, and the creaking card door isn't reassuring. the IQ is there, but so is the creaking...
Mine is terrible - it creaks nearly as badly as my original 5D's did. Why didn't Canon warn us that this camera was going to be just the same as the 5D in so many respects? It even looks like a 5D. I was hoping mine would look like a 1Ds3 but be as light and small as a 450D. I can't believe that I fell for the 'budget' 21 Mpixel / 1080p-video marketing only to find that they haven't changed the camera design radically from the previous 5D. They should have called this camera the '5D mark 2'. What a rip-off.
Mine creaks too...even my XTi doesn't creak . It sounds like a couple mating . It seems Canon is waiting to see what problems need to be fixed before releasing larger batches.
I used electrical tape on the inside of the CF door and around the battery compartment door. I also used a precision screw driver to tighten the small screw inside the battery compartment near the edge of the door and its still squeaky, but better.
I tried Brainiac's suggestion of nose grease, but that didn't work and when I ran out of nose grease I used nose boogers, but that didn't work either. I don't know WTF is "gaffer tape" so I used electrical tape and it works better.
Shoddy build quality is fine. Look at the 5D. Turns out plenty of people didn't give a crap about build quality, and cared only about image quality and money. All my original 5D's had exactly the same squeaky door. Nevertheless it was a superb tool that I relied on and would again, if we didn't now have a new squeaker. There is no argument that squeaking spoils video - you can barely hear it above the noise of AF, IS, and the rubbing of your fingers. If you want to use the 5D to record sound you MUST HAVE AN EXTERNAL MICROPHONE. The squeaky door is not an issue, unless you are a build quality fetishist, in which case buy a 1 series and be happy.
Does anyone know if Canon will fix this if you take it in for service?
The problem (on mine at least) is the CF door hinge isn't wide enough by about 0.5mm and has room to shift along the connecting pin. The only way to fix it is to replace it with another door, or tape an edge so it doesn't shift. I'd just do that myself but I feel funny considering the camera is two months old and not cheap.
Almost forgot- doesn't happen much with small primes, only with larger zooms (which I use most naturally)
