p.1 #1 · The People of Osu In Nagoya Japan (231-Image Collage)

The People of Osu In Nagoya Japan

All taken a few days ago in a two hour period. Processed this morning in about 30 minutes. I took 250 shots and deleted 19 - (There are 231 pics total here). The camera was in manual mode with AF Tracking turned on. It looks like there's still a few out-of-focus or with a little too much motion blur that also need to die.

This was fun! I hope you enjoy looking as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Maybe you should change the title to "The Entire Population of Nagoya Japan"

Thanks, I enjoyed looking at them.

P.S. # 1,244 is my favorite.

I suggest you post a few of your favourites, then provide a link to the rest.
I've never seen this many pictures - or even 1/4 as many - in one post.
The guys with slow connections will be annoyed.

!

Hehehe... I guess I could number the rows. But I think none of these photos individually are very good... Maybe the old man in the bar, I dunno... but together as a single "work" I kinda dig it. I notice that on this grey BG that many of them appear slightly overexposed and blue-cast - which they didn't in PS. :-/

Oh well.

About how long did they take to load and display for you? I compressed them pretty hard so they could load fast in a conglomerate like this. For me the 1st time they take 7 seconds. The second time or on a refresh they take 1.5 seconds.

I like it. Some times a few of the same person/people were too close together.

What if you shot a 'day' and could see not only the light change into night, but the dress and atmosphere change?

Cool.

The one with the guy and the dog sitting down in front of the car in the background really jumps out at me.
These would make a great collage.

No, that's when 7/10 pics are OOF and another 2/10 have no subject. :P
But ya, way way too many pics for here.

Thanks for commenting Orguss!
Where were you in Japan, what did you see?
BTW, I usually don't click off-site links either unless it's a review or news article.

Thanks Fstop!
That's what it's all about!

Yeah, that's not a bad one either... I just looked at all 250 and said basically the same thing... these would make a great collage but there's no way these warrant me spending 10 to 30 minutes on each one trying to make them look "great". Mostly it was an exercise in low-light 3D focus tracking - which actually was MUCH more functional on this little A2 bridge unit than it was on my D2x which is saying quite allot I thought.
Thanks for taking the time to comment FSJ! It's appreciated!

Yeah, I processed that one. Maybe I'll post it as a large single later on or something.
It's not "fantastic" but it's pretty good - especially with processing.
Thanks for the comment!

Hehehe, A new term and concept for me!
Thanks for the comment man!

Yeah, For shooting I was actually trying. I was in manual mode under several very different lighting conditions - so I had the A and S thumb wheels going - I was very intent on subject selection and framing as well. It felt more hectic (in a good way) than fashion photography. It was fun tho!
Do you mean too many or too heavy? Too many is what I was going for - it's a collage. Too heavy would be a bad thing but I checked before posting and there were several threads here where 1 page of the thread was several times heavier - so I felt assured.
Do you think I should split the thread?
I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Thanks Weiyang!

Great idea. You really need an editor though. You could have pulled the missed focus photos, the almost duplicates, etc..........
Thanks for sharing.

I can still do that. This editor works pretty well. I did also use an external editor to compose the message text and links.

Good Idea about pulling the remaining OOFs... I will from now!

Thanks Bill!

Interesting project with a great idea. However, quantity will never overcome quality, a collage of snapshots is simply that. Again, I really like the idea, but there are too many similar subjects there to be much impact, and not enough similarity for there to be much impact. I heard Nagoya people were like that.

I guess my main beef besides that is that there is nothing to give the viewer a sense of location, time, or place. In this case, timelessness isn't such a good thing.

It is a great concept, and certainly a great project...I might give it a try here in little Itoman.

OK, I edited it and changed the spacing so that different browser widths will produce a different order and hopefully a little different experience. If you have a dual monitor screen it's kinda kewl (imo).

Haha.. Yes! Nagoya people ARE like that - so, that was pretty funny... They can't help it though, this has been the manufacture capitol since WWII and before so the factory mentality has been ingrained over 5 generations or more.

I appreciate your comments! I wonder if we all define "collage" differently and how those definitions vary. It's not a very concrete concept - in my mind at least. I see many different styles that can be and indeed are called collages. And where do we draw the line between mural and collage? It's all slightly vague to me and I imagine to many of us. It's a fairly versatile form. I'm not bucking your comments or anything but wondering and asking in order to understand and learn more.

Learning ROCKS!

Thanks again for the comment Runner!

Where in Japan are you BTW?

Thanks Sam!

I removed a few more OOF and near-dups. I guess there's still a few more.

I'll get to them in the near future.
