p.4 #1 · So, why would anyone buy 1DIII now?

Masaya Maeda, Director and Chief Executive of Cannon Immging, made the following reply to a question diected to himby DPReview. Some professional users have expressed concern about the fact that the 5D Mark II offers the same resolution and a more modern processor than the EOS-1Ds Mark III, making the 1Ds Mark III seem a little dated. What are your thoughts on the relative positioning of the two products?

"That's a very good question. The 5D Mark II we're positioning as the very highest product in our high-end enthusiast range. The EOS 1Ds Mark III, by comparison, offers robust durability and long shutter life as the most important features for use in harsh studio conditions, we believe. However when it comes to image quality itself; because of the constant digital technology developments in this industry, it's always the latest camera that is best. So things like ISO expansion range and dynamic range are in a sense better in the 5D Mark II."

Perhaps the new Series I bodies are not too far off

Seriously the IQ (image quality...) of those who posted here is about 160 collectively...at low resolution

Judging by the responses on this thread as well as your other threads which have been referenced here.... I think the IQ and I do NOT mean the image quality with a 2 digit number is appropriate for the OP...

Give us a break and troll away at the forums that have that rep..

and yes i own a l Dmk 111 and a 5D and i have a love hate relationship with it.
you guys should get to know some of the people who has real issues with this camera
and stop defending canon for Their major screw up.

And you should possibly get to know who some of the trolls are before you attack the rest of us for calling them out. First of all, by his own admission Stockriderman shoots with a 10D not a Mark III (discussed in another thread concerning the 1DsMKII/III). Secondly, if you would take a look at all his postings here you would find the majority of those to have the same type of confrontational trolling comments and attitudes. In some cases he's got several threads going on at the same time in different forums, sometimes even using the same sentences.

I will agree that it can be unduly harsh in these forums at times. But there are also a fair share of individuals in here who simply want to get a reaction rather than participate in a constructive manner. Personally I think what you're seeing is a lot of good members fed up with such antics by a few individuals.

No one is defending Canon for the poor handling of the Mark III issues. In fact there have been many criticisms leveled at Canon for dropping the ball. I'm not defending Canon. But I AM telling you and everyone else that MY "yellow dot" latest firmware Canon EOS 1D Mark III works. Period. I think you're hearing the same from a lot of other owners. And it never fails that every time someone speaks up to talk about how great their MK III is, someone always chimes in stating for a fact that the Mark III sucks and is the worst camera ever released and they are switching to Nikon and we can't possibly be serious because Rob Galbraith said . . . blah, blah, blah. Enough, really.

When it's a repeated pattern of behavior that is counter productive to the rest of this community I think that it's absolutely justified. WE can all just get along (so tired of this quote). Unfortunately it's just a few repeat offenders who, for whatever reason, find more enjoyment in taunting the rest of the community that seem to have a problem playing with others. Maybe you should be directing your comments towards them instead.

I think several people here are being a little hard on the OP.

Let me rephrase the issue. Given that the 5D2 has many advanced features for comparatively little money doesn't it make Canon's existing top of the range pro bodies look overpriced?

That might be what he wanted to say.

It never fails that when someone points out the crappy Mark III AF the fanboys come rushing to the defense of their beloved company and trash the dissenters. All it shows is that the fanboys seldom, if ever, use their Mark IIIs in the situations where it FAILS REPEATEDLY. I'd recommend that the fanboys get out in the field and talk to the people who know the facts, and see the evidence for themselves, but that would be wasting my time because fanboys are impervious to any reality that conflicts with their fannishness.

I know...
Hey did you see that article in the canon connection mag Eos-1D Mark111 auto focus decoded?

I think you must have mistaken this forum for dpreview. No problem, you can find those types of forums by following this link. You'll find the maturity level there is more suited to your own:

I don't see ANY reasons why anyone would consider buying a 1D MarkIII camera over 5D MarkII Was it Canon intention to introduce this camera for people to change over from 1D. I mean, 1D III was sort of a failure, with all the photographers complaining about focusing issues that it has. If 5D doesn't have the same issues, it seems to me nobody would be buying 1D series bodies.

This is the sort of logic that a guy in a 'tricked-out' Honda Civic on Dubs uses.

Alot of the issues with the Mark III came from people who bought it, did not know how to use it, then read it had problems so they returned it because " they must have a bad camera too". I am soooo tired of these post where the bashing continues by people who do not know how to use the things they buy.

No issues with my Mark III either. ALways amazes me the people who have the most to say negative have least experience with the item.... I am not saying there were not some bad Mark III's out there, but there are some very good ones as well....And for every person with a Canon horror story, there is somebody with a bad Nikon, bad Sony, bad BMW, bad ( insert any brand name here)

Furthermore, comparing the 5D II to a Mark III is a waste of time....apples to oranges, or any other cliche you might insert here.....Aimed at two different markets.....two different types of professionals.
