I haven't encountered this. Would switching off auxiliary focus points help?
Braniac, no its specifically under this condition (focus assist = off, One Shot AF) that the truly bizarre stuff happens. Check out my 'test' in the MA Idiosynchracies' thread. Its just completeley nuts.

Some try this test and pass it, some dont.
I feel for you but still have no problems with my 1D3 at all. I only know what micro adjust is because I've read about it. All my lenses work just fine without it.
What's so irritating about the focus anomalies that _some_ people experience with the mk3's is that otherwise the cameras are peerless. Superb handling, superb image quality, superb lens compatibility, silent mode, liveview blah blah you name it. I love mine but since I have a preference for manual focussing, I am used to putting a lot of care into that, and I don't expect myself to nail every shot bang on. I don't shoot sport. I would like to use AF more, but for me the problem with AF is that the focus points cover too small an area of the frame. The best camera from that point of view is the Nikon D300, but I don't like crop format, or the limitations of the F mount. There is no perfect camera. Yet.

I don't see ANY reasons why anyone would consider buying a 1D MarkIII camera over 5D MarkII Was it Canon intention to introduce this camera for people to change over from 1D. I mean, 1D III was sort of a failure, with all the photographers complaining about focusing issues that it has. If 5D doesn't have the same issues, it seems to me nobody would be buying 1D series bodies.
Yeah, it's a failure for sure. Especially the ability to shoot h.s. night games at ISO 3200! It's also funny how many people I shoot for tell me how much they love the images too.
Well I just got my 50D to test/compare to both my Mk IIIs and D3. I think that it might well be possible to take equal (or maybe better/more detain?) of relaxed people. Even thought the 50D has 6 fps no other camera body equals the AF acquire and re-acquire, critical (yes critical when the MA is adjusted right) focus during 10 fps operation.
Coming from one who uses a 10D, it can be confusing to think it's a step down by getting a 1D and a step up by getting a 5D. In this case, more is less and less is more
