While I will be the first one to ask for even more than 21MP, so the file size is just fine with me, the above statement is not quite true. You can't shoot at say 10MP in true raw. sRaw is subsampled / binned, call it whichever way you want, and the pixels are true RGB and not R/G/B (separate). This means that the debeyer step has already been done by the camera, and doing the debeyer in software is one of the great benefits of raw. You lose that ability. For maximum image quality -- even if you're not after size but just after "clean-ness" (noise), you have to shoot full raw to be able to do the debeyer in software. Regardless how good the debeyer is in the camera, computer software will improve and if you use sRaw you're stuck with whatever the camera baked in at the time of exposure. While this may not be an everyday occurrence, I do find myself going back to my 1Ds images from back in the day and re-processing them, and am happy that the software got better in the last 6 years. With sRaw you lose this ability, at least partially....Show more →
Very true Stan... On top of that, by using a 10MP mRAW you will loose 50% resolution and only gain 25% file space.
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.
I already sayd: "This camera is mine" in the previous rumor thread.
After a couple of days passed now and I suggested to purchase an offered 5D (nice price), discussed with the best photographer of all my friends and found out maybe a 50D will be enough for both of our needs ... I at least came back to the earlier result.
Its mine!
If Canon does not offer a 5D MK II "s" the last days on Photokina (the same camera without video and at 16MP at ISO 12.800 usable), its still my choice.
A: Weather sealing? - I never had a better one the last 31 years
B: Old AF? - I was and I am still happy with the 30Ds
C: Same shutter? - I do not care. It was great and they increased lifetime to 150%
D: Frame rate? - I do no sports nor action. And when I did I did one/two frames at the right moment
E: 21MP - I need a new pc anyway. My box is 6 years old now. My friends new PC for € 700 is up to 25 times faster with photoshop.
F: IQ - never saw something better at DR, res and high-ISO. The only cameras that might overcome it, are the new 1Ds coming soon. But that will be a different price level, too. The 1Ds MK III just went up again in germany. That is the only competitor actual WW. Before I would purchase it - if I had the money - I would buy a 5D MK II, a 50D backup body, one more lense and investigate the rest of the money (€ 2600) in a flight ticket to asia and shoot people there.

Ah, I forgott: That videostuff is AMAZING!...Show more →

I agree 100%
The recent lack of concern of IQ over HD video is getting pretty annoying. Has people forgotten that this is a still camera? The small rash of smudgy jpegs that was spread throught out the internet has me very concerned. Could this be that 'bells'n'whistles/marketing' camera that will have people running back to their older 5D cause of the lack of detail in their massive 25mb file size pictures!?
Relax, Emmett. Canon has been chastised for "not giving 5D2 its best sensor", meaning that it does not have full gap-less microlenses the way 50D has it. 5D2 sensor is, apparently, an improved IDs3 senor. With that, lack of detail is highly unlikely. Canon can't at the same time get beat because it uses a proven world-class sensor and because there is no detail coming from it.
No Canon digital SLR was ever released with accompanying 'wow' shots (I stand to be corrected).
The original 5D samples were mediocre at best. I'd say there'll be detail to spare in the MK II files if good lenses and good technique are employed throughout.
I thought it looks pretty good. I mean, there is a lot of resolution and detail in the cropped image. If you look at the veil, you can clearly make out the weave or pattern of the fabric.

Oh no, now we'll have threads comparing subprimes to subzooms.

I surely hope so. I will be buying the new 5D MkII as soon as I see enough evidence that IQ is very good (JPEG or RAW, preferably both).
If I understand correctly, we should only start seeing more samples and real photos (including RAW) once the camera is officially released, right?
In late November, the pictures (From me and others :P ) will start to pour in!
I wonder if my 85 1.8, 50 1.4, 24 1.4, 70-200 2.8, 58 1.2, 135 2.8 etc are up to the 21 MPIX task :P I know for sure that the sensor will wring every last bit of detail from my lenses
As a film maker I'm buying it ASAP and selling every video camera I have. For stills, not for the 45 AF though which I wish it had... Oh well waiting for the 1D MK IV or 1DS MK IV.
I love it, the full frame sensor, the film DOF... Mega high ASA, with low noise/grain... Weep other video manufactures... Weep...

You got that a bit wrong. 10MP is obviously 50% the file size of 20MP, and it will have 70% the resolution (1 over square root of two). All in all a great trade-off.

I think the exact number is somewhat irrelevant. But that's not the point: for the very small space savings on disk (which is fact), you lose the huge benefit of doing debeyer in post processing.

Ok, i'll try and stay calm and wait for further pictures.
Its just that, I am a bit worried as I am excited.
