FYI- I just spoke with Canon sales after calling for repair status on a lens and was told that the MK II kits will be shipping "late November", but the bodies will not ship until mid December.
I hope this is not true. Guess we'll see very soon.
Just a week to 10 days ago, it was bodies first kits later. Before that it was kits first bodies later. My dealer even said bodies first a week ago. Honestly, there are so many different stories out there hard to know what the facts are until they are in the store.
Talked to my dealer today, they had thought they would have had them this week and I would have one by Thanksgiving. No go, they are hoping to get them next week sometimes. They said the delay had something to do with packaging Don't know what that means.
I have a quick question I just managed to find somewhere that looks like they will actually have some stock at the end of the month in the UK (play.com) but I realised after ordering it that you can get the 1D mark III for the same price. Although it is only 10.1mp it does seem remarkably quick and is said to have good low light performance. Can anyone comment as to why you should go for the 5D mk2 rather than a 1D III ?

Because the following things are more important to you:
- Full frame
- 21mp
- smaller, compact, lighter body
- better LCD
Yea forgot about the HD video, yes that is another plus in the 5D2. However, I will say that it'll be a cold day in hell before I replace my 1D3 with a 5D2, but its welcome to ride shotgun
Try to find a true 180 degree horizontal fisheye lens that works with your 1D Mark III (1.3 crop). For the 5D mark II no problem - EF 15mm F2.8 FE, or the Sigma
Want a 17mm lens equivalent view with the 1D mark III? bummer
With the 5D mark II no problem - EF 17-40 F4, 16-35mm F2.8, Tokina 17mm, ...
point is the 5D Mark II & 1D mark III are not the same animals.
1080P HD video will be awesome for birds in flight. You will actually see the bird fly. You can have video of the BIF & stills.
They are both very different and both very fine animals. If you are into sports and wildlife, it's hard to beat the 1D3. If you are into landscapes and wedding/studio photography the 5DII is simply awesome. If you shoot all of these, get both cameras!

Very few of the people who can wrangle a place for the initial shipment would want the kit. The 5D was body only at first.
That was then. This is 2008 with an economy that stinks, including for Canon. The 5D2 is one of Canon's few bright spots with thousands of people in line. If Canon is true to form, the only way to deal with an enthusiastic, eager waiting list is to take advantage of them.
Why sell them just the camera, when we can make so much more by making those suckers buy the camera and a lens! In fact, that is probably the real reason there may be a packaging delay. They had to unpack all those bodies and put them in a kit box. Ka Ching!
Please excuse the outburst. I forgot to take my anti-cynicism pill today.

I have the 5DII body only on order at a fixed price but just in case your guess should become reality this order is cancelled until the price has dropped and availability becomes normal. Even if it takes a whole year.

Maybe I'm one of the few, but I actually would not mind getting the 24-105L. I have eye balled the lens for quite some time and feel this may be the time to get it. Looks like a good walk around lens to me and from the results I have seen, it does quite well.
There was even a rumor, say again, rumor, that the lens was getting a make over for the 5DmkII, but I'm 99% sure it is just that, a rumor.

That doesn't make any sense. First fallacy is starting with the presumption that there is a delay when the delivery date hasn't been reached and there's no real evidence of a delay.
The second fallacy is presuming Canon would drop the bone in their mouths to reach for a reflection. Pre-orders are as close to sold cameras as they can get without having money in hand--doing anything to make customers think twice in times like these would be the dumb move. Those cameras represent accounts payable right now that Canon has to turn into accounts receivable.
If anything, they would be unpacking kits to fulfill body orders, but that's not really likely. When you've got a huge operation going, you don't make sudden changes unless you're dying. You can't change shipping schedules like that--when you've got a container scheduled for a certain liner at a certain date, you're paying for it whether you use it or not. The chance for error is enormous, and Canon is not a risk-taking company. Their best bet is to put the assembly line on overtime.
As far as Canon rebates are concerned, it appears Canon has already stepped up to the plate and will make good on them. Obviously it will now probably take longer than expected to get a valid check, but at least they are addressing the situation quickly.
