I have a quick question I just managed to find somewhere that looks like they will actually have some stock at the end of the month in the UK (play.com) but I realised after ordering it that you can get the 1D mark III for the same price. Although it is only 10.1mp it does seem remarkably quick and is said to have good low light performance. Can anyone comment as to why you should go for the 5D mk2 rather than a 1D III ?
wow great find.
never thought of looking at play for the 5d2. I went to preorder it and they asked for the back 3 digits of the card though which was wierd... i hope they dont bill upon preorder.
Here's hoping they keep their word and ship on the 30th
Looks like we have an official date from Canon for both the body and kit. November 29th. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/eosd/5dmk2/&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3D%25E3%2583%25AC%25E3%2583%25B3%25E3%2582%25BA%25E3%2582%25AD%25E3%2583%2583%25E3%2583%2588%2B11%25E6%259C%258829%25E6%2597%25A5%25E7%2599%25BA%25E5%25A3%25B2%25E4%25BA%2588%25E5%25AE%259A%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3DZPl
But that's Canon Japan, not Canon USA. (great find tho). Maybe the date will end up being the same, but those shipping containers would want to be touching ashore very very soon...
I talked with one of the biggest pro. camera dealers here in Denmark yesterday and they are hoping and expecting a delivery next week so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Perfect, around the same time the D3x will be released.

I think the Pirates in Somalia are building up stock on them. They need a few more kits to balance out the body only numbers.
Sign the petition, "no more cameras for oil".
If we cave now, the next thing will be a rogue nation buying up all the world's stock of FF chips and holding them for ransom.
searching for the 5d mk2 on amazon.co.uk doesnt seem to go down well with amazon... they insist on bringing up the Nikon D700 too
Ironically this doesnt seem to happen with the initial 5d....
Kurt
wow, the D700 is astonishingly less expensive too.
you have great nikon pricing and poor canon pricing over there.
i think i'd be a nikon shooter for sure, if in the UK.

Just for informational purposes: I talked to Midwest Photo in Columbus today. They ordered 300 cameras. Had about 100 pre-orders. Expect 35 or so in the first shipment sometime next week. The Canon rep there said she had no clue when they were coming.

I am confused. Did they was the first batch is coming in next week, or they have no clue?
Just got off the phone with a Canadian shop (wanted to order there because of the USD-CAD rate right now.
His Canon rep told him December 6th. Also, that demand is FAR exceeding supply, and that they can expect 35 of the 300 they have ordered at the first wave. He quoted 6 months to fill the entire order.

I am amazed that several local camera stores have ordered 300 units .... if this is to be believed. I mean, do they seriously think they can sell 300 units in a matter of months? How big are these stores anyway - surely they are not in the same league as B&H, Adorama, Amazon, etc? I am also very skeptical of anything that any Canon rep says, as they have no hard facts, so it's all conjecture.
People are still debating and wondering if they should get the 5D II, the 1Ds3, or the D700 .... which suggests that the 5D II is not so hot that supply cannot cope with demand.

You bring up some interesting points here and it kinda' fits in to the deposit we are seeing in Canada. Maybe Canon is seeing stores ordering 300 units and is telling stores, let's see your actual orders before we send you that many cameras. If there are all these big orders Canon is probably trying to spread the initial shipment out as thin as possible- Just a thought.
I had to give a deposit, in the U.S., for reasons I did not ask for. I suspected that the shop had gotten burned by people ordering from several different stores and didn't want to contend with that. Perhaps it is connected to the Canadian deposit deal, I don't know.
I am not sure that there are that many people really wanting to switch over to the D700 unless they were on the fence all along. People that have been with Canon for several years would usually have quite a bit of gear, and would need to sell that stuff off. While the Nikon cameras have nice prices, their lenses don't.
If I could afford a 1DsmkIII, I would have gotten that and not worried about the 5D mkII. The mkIII is just too costly for most considering the 5D mkII is a more affordable version, albeit less sophisticated, of the mkIII.
I talked to 3 different people today and 3 different companies....all so cal, one an ad agency, one in sports apparel and one is a bicycle component company. Each had decent size layoffs today (all small companies).
All this BS about "dealers are saying huge demand" is such a load. The economic signs are worse and worse everyday...
