what do you guys reckon my chances are of obtaining one in NYC at the beginning of December without pre-ordering?
Zero. Zillch. Zip. (Barring some miracle)
For example I am No 1 on the Perth pre-order list at one of the top Canon Pro Dealers (ordered well prior to the announcement). Canon have just advised their Perth dealers that there will only be 2 or 3 5D IIs for the whole of Western Austrialia in the initial shipment in the next couple of weeks, a similar number later in December, and availability improving in January, but likely to be in short supply for a few months until orders settle down.
There is aparently a world wide shortage, with orders exceding availability factors of 10s or even 100s in some countries for the next few months. Canon know that some people will have placed multiple pre-orders etc. However this is the hottest demand full frame they have produced.

I want to know too. I am on the waillist at Calumet, but its not the "preorder" list, which comes first. I regret not preordering it instead of just being put on the regular WL.
This preorder stuff sucks bigtime, I wish all stores didnt accept preorder and just released it like the ipod/iphone/ps3/gamecube/etc., so everybody has a fighting chance and sleepover in front of the store the night before arrival if you really want it.

Slim to none. The only chance would be to go to a place that doesn't do business on line (mom and pop type place), but I would be afraid you would pay dearly IF they had them. (plus you would have to pay the hefty NY tax)
this is just ridiculous. i sold my 5D expecting this would be normally available but nobody knows anything and i've got a month of shooting in the US ahead of me. might just have to buy a 5D, then sell it again.
edit: still pretty much the same i'd pay here (Netherlands). i have one pre-ordered here but i'm afraid Europe won't get them until January or something
Well....Canon can still ship out to dealers on Friday Nov 28, 2008 from Japan to meet internal company deadlines, but for practical purposes it means 1st week of December.
I would say, once your dealer gets shipping/tracking info from Canon, then we'll know, but time is running out for this month.

Finally, the 5D Mk II is a camera that temps me to sell my 1D Mk II, a camera that has kept me away from yearly upgrades for 4 years. I've had the Pro70, D30, D60, 10D, 1DS, 1D Mk II...maybe some bodies in between I've forgotten.

My CPS dealer seems to think that we'll be getting more than that, he has quite a few on order and I'm sure the other CPS in WA (the handful that we have) will be getting more than one each.
Or at least that's what I'm hoping, I've got two on order and I really need both from day one.

one of my local dealers says taht nobody knows anything until they arrive in the local regional warehouses which is about 2-3 days before the store sells them.
Met some Canon (France) guys Monday at a Paris photo show. They said the first cams were on time for November delivery. But they also said that the orders had been much, much more than anticipated, so that there was no way they would be in stock at that time or soon thereater.

No, what was ridiculous was selling your 5D when you knew the projected shipping date of the new model was "end of November." New Canon DSLRs have been heavily pre-ordered since the 10D--this is nothing new.
That 5D must be one complicated piece of machinery. Boeing can make airplanes at a faster rate than that.
No, they can't. I've been on the waiting end for Boeing aircraft before. What was even worse, they couldn't make the airplanes of a later order exactly the same as the earlier order.
My goodness! You guys are like kids waiting for Xmas. What are you going to do if the camera doesn't live up to all the hype? If this camera isn't ABSOLUTELY perfect in every respect I can just see thread after endless thread of people complaining about noise, sharpness, AF, white balance, ad nauseum...

Even if this camera is absolutely perfect you will see all those complaining threads. The new camera will not fix human errors and the camera will get the blame.
Like kids waiting for Christmas? Yes, just more expensive toys
