I've contacted Adorama again about the dates, but not heard back. My local dealer hasn't heard from Canon, but told me this morning that if it was going to be next week, they would've received word about shipping. Since next week is Thanksgiving week in the US, shipping arrangements for next week should be finalized.
Therefore, I would expect 1st week of December 2008.
Canon would consider first shipment in December a failure. Conservative is O.K. Boring is even O.K. for Canon. Failure is not O.K., especially at this point in Canon's history.
With all the approved pre-release imagining it doesn't feel like it will be late.
A shop in France (Oelhing) just told me that they should be delivered the first week of december, they have 300 preordered (and paid), and they are not sure that they will get as many on the first batch, then they expect to be delivered every week. They sell for 2399€, a competitive price for France (this is 2998$ at today's rate).
Just heard back from Adorama via email, they have no official ETA from Canon. That's all they said. I think it would be safe to say that first shipment (from retailers to consumers) will be the 1st week of December, and if all of you recall Chuck Westfall's interview, he was quoted as saying before year end. Its possible next week that Canon will start shipping from factory to retailer; however, as said before, since its a short week next week in the US, dealers should have heard about shipping dates by now.

But, it's not uncommon for initial shipments to be delayed for a week or two.
People have been expecting this now for the second half of November. If it's available the beginning of December, it's not much of a delay. Certainly not enough to cause people to buy something else.
It's very possible that the pent up demand was more than Canon bargained for, and delayed a small bit to get more cameras produced, and into the first shipment, so that they wouldn't have to rush out another too quickly, which would cost them more to do.
