I agree, I've backed away from the "emergency only" a bit.
But you have to compare a 300 with the equivalent length lens that you get with the converter, not the same length lenses. The 300 would need to be tested against the 400, for the 1.4x, and the 600 for the 2x, etc.
gladly if you give me $7000 for a 400mm f/2.8 or 500mm f/4
i have my address ready for shipping
will it beat a 400 2.8 at f/4 no? then again, maybe, so you better ship the lens to me ASAP
but a 300 2.8 IS + 1.4x TC (420mm) WILL beat the 100-400 at 400 and it's faster than the 400 f/5.6 PLUS has IS and some say it's only marginally worse once you remove the CA in ACR.
anyway, if it can beat a 100-400 and arguably overall beat a 400 f/5.6 and if the quality in the end is not worse than many lenses BARE (and not junk either, such as the 300 f/4 prime) I don't think it's that big of a deal, again if the quality is not acceptable with that then you can't use 80-90% of the lenses on the market.
and the only other way, in this particular case, to get 400mm or so at f/4, is the 400 2.8 and that is a mere $6000-7000 more than the $250 TC and putting the TC on the 400 2.8 you get the 500-600mm ish f/4 again at like getting on towards $10,000 less and it's a far more portable package and easier to treck after some bird with. But this was not about that side of things.
and what do you do when you need more reach and you already have the 500, 600 or the 800? even if unlimited money?

I do understand the cost problem. That's the main reason for converters, even though they do lower the quality, and take away a stop or more.
If I had the money, I'd give it to you.
Well, if you have the 800, you can always special order the 1,200 for a price they aren't disclosing.

but considering how very avg (for a super tele) the MTF for the 1200mm were i wonder if the 800 with TC might not be just about the same. Anyway, this a question FAARRRRR beyond my means to answer, but perhaps we can consult the sultan of brunei (yes, he is said to have purchased one of the 1200mm's).
the 1200mm is the sort of lens where you hope the tree falls on you car rather than your lens, maybe even your house

Sorry, to have to disappoint those who have over a hundred grand to buy this lens, but as Canon pointed out that it is not for sale to anybody who can afford it. They brought in a couple for an exhibition last year and also published on our newspaper that there are only 10 available as of time of writing. Only a couple of private owners and they are the Sultan of Brunei and Steve Palmer of Microsoft, the rest are owned by the news and sports medias.
I wonder if one of those guy standing behind the lens is me?
Only one fool (a trust worthy fool who had post 4371 messages on the forum at time of writing) who wrote on the PopPhoto Forum that said he had a couple of dozen of them. He even go as far as to show a couple of pictures taken with it.

There was mention of the 5dII's weather resistance in terms of xx mm rain/hour... anybody know where that figure came from? I've searched Canon's site and couldn't find anything that stated that.

10 mm/3 minutes from product announcement materials. DPreview has a list. That is pretty strong rain. Equates to almost 8 inches / hour.
