I do understand the cost problem. That\'s the main reason for converters, even though they do lower the quality, and take away a stop or more.

Well, if you have the 800, you can always special order the 1,200 for a price they aren\'t disclosing.
but considering how poor the MTF for the 1200mm were i seriously wonder if the 800 with TC might not be the same. anyway, this a question FAARRRRR beyond my means to answer, but perhaps we can consult the sultan of brunei (yes, he is said to have purchased one of the 1200mm\'s)
the 1200mm is the sort of lens where you hope the tree falls on you car rather than your lens, maybe even your house
