I said that with some lenses it would be acceptable in the center, and stopped down several stops, and that with others it would be unusable. In the sizes presented, they look good.
But my point is that when compared to the actual equivalent lens, it would be inferior, noticeably so.
For people interested in the highest IQ, it would be unacceptable. Sometimes things look great, except when compared to things that look better. We\'ve all gone through that.
you said emergency use only
those were WIDE OPEN f/4 not several stops closed down
those were 100% crops so there is no \"at the size they are presented\"
the 300 2.8 IS with the TC does better than the BARE 300 f/4 wide open and same goes for the 100-400L, 100-300L, 70-300 IS at 300mm, sigma 120-300, etc. so there are a lot of lenses you better throw away as unacceptable if the TC is bad.
yes, they do degrade, but with the best lenses it\'s nothing to be afraid of even if you are pretty critical.
I agree, I\'ve backed away from the \"emergency only\" a bit.
But you have to compare a 300 with the equivalent length lens that you get with the converter, not the same length lenses. The 300 would need to be tested against the 400, for the 1.4x, and the 600 for the 2x, etc.
gladly if you give me $7000 for a 400mm f/2.8 or 500mm f/4
i have my address ready for shipping
will it beat a 400 2.8 at f/4 no? then again, maybe, so you better ship the lens to me ASAP
but a 300 2.8 IS + 1.4x TC (420mm) WILL beat the 100-400 at 400 and it\'s faster than the 400 f/5.6 PLUS has IS and some say it\'s only marginally worse once you remove the CA in ACR.
anyway, if it can beat a 100-400 and arguably overall beat a 400 f/5.6 and if the quality in the end is not worse than many lenses BARE (and not junk either, such as the 300 f/4 prime) I don\'t think it\'s that big of a deal, again if the quality is not acceptable with that then you can\'t use 80-90% of the lenses on the market.
and the only other way, in this particular case, to get 400mm or so at f/4, is the 400 2.8 and that is a mere $6000-7000 more than the $250 TC and putting the TC on the 400 2.8 you get the 500-600mm ish f/4 again at like getting on towards $10,000 less and it\'s a far more portable package and easier to treck after some bird with. But this was not about that side of things.
and what do you do when you need more reach and you already have the 500, 600 or the 800? even if unlimited money?
back to 5dmkii talk....
looks like a pre-end of november release is now a no go, certainly the \"it arrives this week\" is shot.
so basically they plan to release it the week all teh stuff i was gonna do with it is over. perfect.
don\'t think i will rush into it anymore, unless it suddenly pops up SOON.
since they seem to be treating it as a Chistmas release for some reason, maybe it will drop in price a couple hundred or more right after, especially if the economy is still sputtering and the sales slow way down. Maybe by some miracle they will announce a 3D-like camera for photokina, seems super unlikely though, since it would kinda kill the 5dmkii for only a few hundreds more just a few months later.
they sure liked sitting on their 5D laurels for the loooongest while and now they face up to a much later than the D700 release, the badly timed economic situation, and missing the fall wedding season in the US (or so I hear from some wedding guys), I don\'t, at all see the logic in timing a 5D release for end of nov/beginning of decemeber, I could be wrong, but it doesn\'t seem like a stocking-stuffer sort of camera to me.....
Yes, canon will survive with no problems at all, but they do seem to shoot themselves in the foot a real lot the last two years in a variety of ways. Shows why its important that both canon and nikon thrive otherwise we\'d be paying more for less and getting new advances at a slower rate for sure. Nikon had stunk it up for a long while before Canon got a light set under them.
