I currently own a Canon 1D MKIIn and was considering buying a 1D MK3. But with all the problems with the MK3 i've been reading I've decided to hold off and wait for the MK4 or what ever they name it. I believe all the bugs will be fixed and it will have a 16MP sensor. I think they should name it the MK4 just because it has a better ring to it. I think having an odd name like the MK3 is cursed from the get go
Are there people like me in the same boat? what do you think? Has anyone heard or seen anything about the next generation 1D?
I look forward to a MK 4 when that time comes, but until then, I will continue to make lots of great photos with my MK 3. I am sure many people do have real issues with the MK 3, but not me. My poor 5D is lonely, but it does get to spend some time with my 1DMK 2 as a team of backup cameras that stand ready, but never seem to get called.
My MKIII has no back-up as it is that trustworthy!
Now if you want to speculate on what the MKIV will have, based on the last two releases, it may be no more than 12MP and even if they kept the speed at 10fps, I would be ok with that, of course it will have Digic-4.
But then one thing I would love more than anything else on the MKIV would be a selectable Sensor, it would be extremely handy to be able to select 1:1, 1.3:1 & 1.6:1...Listening Canon?
It has to be seen if Canon will dramatically update their current AF. For all we know Canon just (slightly) modifies the mkIII AF and put it inside the mkIV. Which would be fine by me, because mine works great. A 1Ds3 that is

In fact, you might not see MK4 because the Japanese think it is cursed. Canon never produced S4 IS but moved directly from S3 IS to S5 IS. Thus we might get a 1D V next, whichever year that happens.

Hummm...... Nikon did not seem to mind it with their F4.....
To the OP all I can say is that it has been 18 months since 1D Mk II and 1D Mk II N and there has been 18 months since the 1D Mk III.
Happy shooting,
Yakim.

My MKIII is a lot better than the MKIIN that I owned before.
I doubt that the changes will be that substantial but they will be of value. If you are in no great hurry then wait. Pricing (both new and resale) will be better. LCD will be better. IQ may improve a little. AF will certainly be better unless they are stupid. If you do need one now just get it from a reputable dealer who takes returns and avoid the urge to save the last penny.

Yes I am pretending the mk III generation didn't exist and have no trouble waiting for whatever comes next in the 1 series lineup. Should be much much better in just about every area; noise, pixel density, AF, LCD, video, battery ...
My Mark III functions perfectly. If some shots are OOF, that always my fault. I love this pro body and hope, that it will serve me for 4 years or so. Just buy a Mark III, do not waste your time with waiting for a Mark IV.

I think batteries will still be 3 x 18650 as in the LP-E4. Perhaps they will be rated with slightly higher capacity, but it would make more sense to retain the same battery pack/charger.

EBH
I meant battery life - Canon is lowering noise through less heat and power consumption etc and this leads to better battery life. Probably won't be a a big improvement but I'm guessing worthwhile.

Maybe you should wait for the 1Dmk5. I've heard that it will be even better than the mk4
my advice is to wait until after photokina, and if nothing new appears on the radar, get the .. 5d mkII )) or if you really need 10fps, mkIII should do the job, the newer ones are better /me thinks.
