p.1 #1 · I got to play with a 50d today.... i got samples for you guys!!! :)
They had two on display at the Tech Expo at Photoshop World.
Not the best samples, since im no pixel peeper
My impressions:
100-3200 is very good. 3200 is more than usable in my eyes. It has about 1.5 stops difference in noise when compared to the 40d. However, 6400 is "ok" and 12800 is questionable. I took some of each for you guys to check out. AF seems the same as it was with the 40d, sad to say. The camera did feel a bit more solid than my 40d. I would def say the 50d is a little more weather resistant, there is alot more room in teh seams of the body on my 40d then the 50d.
I uploaded all of them SOOC on my flickr, and will also do some 100% crops and some noiseware on some to show what can be done.

The ISO1600 shots are awesome, the ISO3200 shots look very usable, but wouldn't go further than that. The ISO6400 shot you took look like they were exposed to the right and had serious banding and color noise issues. This may be some new fancy sensor, but it still doesn't compare to my Mark III at high ISO. hmm...
What noise reduction level were you using?
Did you do any work with the shots in post to see how well they hold up to additional NR.

Thanks for the samples! I would say the ISO 3200 crop has about the same amount of noise as a ISO 1600 shot from my 40D. Really amazing considering the 50D got 50% more pixels.

NOISE REDUCTION SET AT 0 in cam..... i wanted to see what it would really be like. I didnt have time to play with NR settings. since i was kinda bootlegging the 50d, they didnt want people to use their own cards. but i did it anyway

So what? It costs $2,750 less than your Mk3.
lets not get into anything here, its just to show people that the dpr examples were not entirely a representation of what this camera can do. 50d and mkiii should not be compared in any way shape or form. Lets keep the discussion on the 50d.

Ugh, at the banding at 6400...
3200 looks to be the max one should go (as already stated), I like how nice the IQ is at that level.

nice post, thx for the pics !!! ISO 6400 is so usable in certain cases, damn 1/400 at f/4. I wonder what I will get with a 50 1.4 at the same ISO....yummy !

ISO1600 looking pretty promising and even 3200 not terrible now, indoor lighting is usually tough, although fluorescent is easier than tungsten.
it just might be 1 stop better than a 40D. Still hard to say, but at least has promise.
iso12,800 a fake, useless joke as expected. Too bad nikon pushes such ridiculousness.
