If it does have video... It'll definantly appeal to me... Especially if it has full frame capture for video... Imagine the quality of the depth of field and video... Something handy cam's just don't have.
I think for years Canon has intended to release a "stripped down" FF camera. The best case will be for them to satisfy initial demand for the 5DII, then release a 7D for those who hesitated at the 5DII price.
They have a lot of factors to consider. Plus, now they have market data and experience to better estimate the impact of low cost FF. Te first real chance of low cost FF would seem to be the first half of next year. The worst case would seem to be that it will take a couple of years.
This camera will likely have the best low light abilities per pixel of any camera. So are they releasing the "7D" or do they market it as a ultra sensitive camera. To do the latter now would work at cross purpose to their promotion of the 5DII.

I can't imagine the video discussion on online forums. A whole 'nother geek area for us to explore..........

If it really is 24, then let's hope Canon has made massive improvements in photosite technology. (which is certainly possible) Otherwise, the new camera may not have the IQ of the old one.
I hear that a lot about the photosites but do you know that for a fact or have you just read that somewhere? Who actually knows how many megapixels they can put on a chip? Especially given that they can easily get 21 on digic3

Chances are it will still be a body & a lens. No direct corneal implants this year!
looks like something smaller than 100mm regarding focal length -
f stop must be higher than 2...
a new prime? why?
24/35/50/85L are perfect for the present eosFUN stuff
Less than a month ago the naysayers will tell you that Canon will NOT release a 5D II that will out-spec the 1D3 and 1Ds3 spec. I and many others here did not want to believe that, based on what Nikon did with the D700. But they were adamant ..... it will NEVER happen because that is just not in the Canon culture. Well, we will find out in a matter of days!

Agree and has happened in Canon history. Digital Rebel cameras have come out with higher MP and some improved features vs latest XXD cameras. XSi and 40D are a recent example (e.g. higher MP and improved live view).
Further back, the EOS 3 came out with a better AF system, same weather sealing and higher FPS (among other improvements) vs the 1N several years before the 1V came out. It didn't completely outspec the 1N, but there were important advances.

for that price and those specs, I might just come back to Canon... but the D90 is awful tempting at the $1000 mark.
From the link:
* 24 Megapixel 24X36 CMOS sensor

Yikes, 2600€ = $3646. How is everyone coming up with the $2600 guesstimated price in the states?

yea...2.6k USD without tax or other kinda expenses added by retailers and middlemen

What's all this going to do to the price of the Nikon D700?
Nothing. The Canon will have better IQ, twice the file size, better LCD, and much higher resolution at high ISO. Nikon will have better weather sealing, more fps, and more cool doodads.
Before you tell me Nikon has better Af with 50 whatever points, go look at the distribution of the points. Iis that 50 points or one giant point?
The Canon may still be priced higher than the D700. They will sell all they can make for the next six months at $3500.
There's a pretty good indications that the D700 sales are not as high as Nikon expected. I'm sure sales are good - they should be. But the camera is and has been always available. This doesn't mean anything bad, obviously it's a very good camera. But it also gives Canon confidence to make the 5DII price high.

experience. Or maybe just reading.
Canon EOS 50D official price in germany is € 1.299
Exchanged in US $ it would be $ 1.808,60.
But your official price is $ 1.399,--, so its $ 400,-- less (22%).
Of course our high tax (19% in germany) is implemented. But excluding tax we still have to pay $ 1.519,44 instead of your 1.399. For the same product. And lenses over their malke a difference up to 30%.
calculated with that 1300 € against 1400$ sheme expect a 5D2 price about $ 2800 compared tu our € 2.600. That is 850 less than the exchangerate would make.
