In the 1D segment the pro's won't care too much about a faster deprecation of a body, especially not if it did enhance productivity, saved them time and cost (workflow, postprocessing, file handling and communication) brings them in a better competive position (deadlines, art director demands, print requirements etc.). After all an extra 1000$ or two, maybe three, for the depreciation of a body is nothing compared to labor cost in the annual account. This cost preoccupation of the 1DsmkIII is a thing from those who call themself semi-pro because they have a wedding or two every other month and maybe some event that brings them the money to buy the next nice lens or gadget Or just the avid amateur who bought this ultimate hobby instrument. I know I know it's not EOSfun to write off on these cameras, but it's not the end of the world if it happens. But then again, seriously who believes Canon will be able to replace or introduce their whole DSLR camera line in 2008? The 450D in january, the 1000D in june, the 50D in september, a 5D successor and the 1Dmk and 1Dsmk next generation? High expectations, low satisfaction. Some of you are gonna be disappointed and have no EOSfun... ...Show more →
Agree, but on the other hand, IF Canon replaced the Mk III's with an "IV" now, like in September, would that not be interpreted as an admission that the Mk III's are flawed beyond repair? It's not like there isn't a cloud over these cameras ... RG's recent "conclusions", comments from pro shooters at the olympics, etc? Any thread on the III's on any site quickly degenerates into an argument.
If so, rather than loose some depreciation, as you point out something that is reasonable and expected by pros, what would the value of a flawed camera be? Who would buy them? Isn't that resale value part of the upgrade process for many pros? Amateurs?
I may be way off here, but I see that as a potential PR blunder that could do long term damage. Sure, the big name pros and organizations will get deals to trade up. But all those small time pros, amateurs, "semi-pro's", hobby folks, and so forth collectively buy a lot of Canon gear. I would suggest that, collectively, these folks deliver more profit to Canon than the big name pros because they don't get deals to use Canon gear ... pay full price.
And what's the PR value of thousands of pretty new 1D III series cameras all over Ebay and Craig's List, etc going begging for buyers at any price?
Wouldn't it be wiser to hold off 6 months or so, do all you can to help the dark clouds over the III's blow over, then release the IV's? Now has got to be the worst time.
