"pro feature" would be the lowest damn price possible
I know that would be EOSfun. But it's a contra dictio in terminis. Pro pricing is high pricing. Since it separates those who make money from photography from those who don't.

Let's not confuse "pro features" with "features on cameras that pros use". Admittedly "pro features" is a sloppy term as it leaves itself open for misinterpretation, but that's the parlance of our times so we're stuck with it for now.
Above, I've listed the features most people here would consider pro features, so I won't repeat those. Saying that this or that pro photographer uses a camera that doesn't have those features doesn't mean that those features aren't in the category of pro features. And using a camera that doesn't have those features doesn't stop one from making money with said camera.
So yes I know the terminology is confusing, but for the sake of discussion let's not debate the merits of the term. It is what it is, and we can carry on a discussion about a set of features designated as pro features without muddying it with claims that pros don't need those features to succeed, because such a statement while true is also irrelevant....Show more →
I think a lot of what are often considered pro features are actually considered that by those not making money with their cameras.
I don't ever remember reading the official list of pro features anywhere.

Comparing the Imaging Resource "still life" images from the 5D and A900 (resized to 12MP) at ISO 800, the A900 is clearly noisier than the currrent 5D. The difference is greater at 1600. 24MP does not mean much if you can't print large or use a crop of a small part of an image to make an 8 x 10.
And it's even worse when compared to the 21 mpix 1Ds3.
But AFAIK Imaging Resource uses in camera jpgs with unkown settings regarding noise reduction and sharpening. So what we can see now is that the A900 produces rather lousy high ISO jpgs. It remains to be seen how high quality RAW conversions may look like.
However, assuming even better high ISO capabilities for the 5D successor, this certainly does not look good for Sony.

*sigh*... I don't know how else to explain it. The word "pro" in "pro features" is still throwing you off even after all that explaining. In short, a feature being a "pro feature" has nothing to do with it being required to make money. It's just a term, and maybe a slightly erroneous term, but one that is in common use and has a meaning wholly distinct from just the meanings of the two words put together. Did you even read what I wrote, or do you just disagree? I'm ok with disagreements, but it doesn't seem like we're communicating here.
And there is such a thing as unwritten conventions. I think when you say "pro features" the vast majority of the posters here know what you're talking about.
I sound like a broken record, but again it's just a term. I'm not completely comfortable with it myself because it causes misunderstandings and unnecessary confusion, but it's what we've got so let's make the most of it by not dissecting the meaning of the word "pro" and instead accepting that "pro features" is a term all unto itself. We could call this category of features "bakalakadaka features" and it would refer to the same feature set without the confusion, but it's not exactly efficient to try and change terminology that is so entrenched.

There is one available right now. It's called the 5D. Wait another month or two and the price will come down even more.
Except that the 5D didnt meet my needs when it came out, and it sure as heck doesnt meet it now.
Perhaps I should modify my post to read:
Speaking purely for myself, my most-desired "pro feature" would be the lowest damn price possible *that meets my requirements*.
This way, if the camera turns out to be less or more that what I had hoped, I can join the rest of the mob in gnashing my teeth and complaining about what a lousy body it is. Does that qualify as EOSFun as well?
3 years waiting for the 5D replacement and now I have to look at fracking moon animation. Gack.

I doubt there are any NDAs. At least outside of Canon vendors, Askey at dpreview made it clear he doesn't have a camera. The clumsy Canon advertising appears to have been done in-house.
There are. A few folks at dpreview tested the new body, and I presume a few are here as well but have simply not identified themselves to avoid having to deal with the competing interests. My WAG (wild #$^ guess) based on the slow trickle of information from said individuals would be 21MP / 14bit / 5+ fps / DIGIC IV / sealed (at least partially) / 19pt AF / microadjust / $3k list. To my knowledge, none were told announcement / release date for the final product, but I concur with the assessment that Canon will do so in the next 24-48 hrs in order to 'eclipse' Sony's buzz. As has been hashed out many times here and elsewhere, Canon is far more fearful of Sony than Nikon and will be incredibly aggressive in their stance.
I have been told by regular UK Canon Pro retailer that they will know full specs etc OFFICIALLY on 16/17th ..Not long, although i am surprised at how well Canon have been able to keep it under wraps for so long; perhaps Canon could teach governments a thing or two!

Yeah - what's that all about. The feature set of a stupid electronic device is successfully withheld from a globally interested audience, yet our bank details, national insurance and our health records are in the public domain (in their millions).
As I said above, even if Canon originally intended to release the new specs just prior to PK, I suspect we'll at least get an 'official leak' (probably from China again) on Thursday.

Front $10-50k of verifiable money for the information and offer it up on various hack sites and I guarantee you'll get all the detail you could ask for while discovering that their security is no better - in fact, probably worse. There just isn't a market for the kids who have those l33t h@x0r sk1lz to break in and get the info.

Idle thought: what's with Tuesday as announcement day? Microsoft and Apple had big product announcements today, the 50D and D700 were announced on Tuesdays, DVD releases are on Tuesdays, etc. Is there some old psychology study that Tuesday is the best day for product announcements or something?
So you want a 1Ds III feature set/spec for $2,000? Well, guess what .... we ALL do .... but it ain't gonna happen unfortunately, not for another couple of years at least.

Well, I've read this Thursday, this Friday, next Tuesday, & September 23rd on this thread alone - all from seemingly well-meaning people who have it from reliable sources (usually their trusted Canon dealer). I think their "viral" marketing strategy has been superb. Hopefully, one of these dates will prove to be correct & preferably an earlier rather than later one!

Well, at least it is unlikely to be tomorrow ... (9/11)
