I did. My dealer told me 3 weeks ago and 2 days after 50D.

Ok, so if we check back here on Friday you'll have posted the news from your dealer & we won't have to endure another two weeks of this?! Right?

This thursday would be a good time to announce. Give Sony it's 48 hrs of fun, then steal the show, as it were.

What date is the Zeiss announcement due?

Speaking of medium format rumors... I thought there was a Canon medium format rumor going around about a year ago... anybody know anything about that??

Back to the 5D... my personal wish list is for what has been described as a 3D. A pro level (especially with respect to the AF) FF body in a small form factor. Additional improvements in IQ and FPS would be appreciated. I was hoping something like that would come out for the approximately $3k (US) range.

disclaimer... I have no inside info from Canon, there are merely wishes (while we wait for the moon to rise).

The evolution thing is interesting. To me evolution brings to mind a change from one kind of thing to another. Perhaps it is a 50D->7D that they have in mind but that does not "feel" like something I would describe as an evolution. Now a 5D->3D... (again wishful thinking) would be an evolution...

Canon has no choice but to sell their 5D replacement at a very, very low price.

Ok, well, given that uncharacteristically long silence from Ralph, I am concluding (once again) that in fact we will have to wait until Photokina to know anything substantive about new releases from Canon ...

You want an amateur level camera, I want a small sized professional level camera. You win. You will have a 50d with FF sensor in two weeks.

Nope. Even if one doesn't have inside information : it's clear enough this is not true. The next camera is not a 50D, one can even see it from the teasers that Canon has given to you. The body for the 5D was built on a separate and independent production line and this is also true for the next camera Look carefully at the teaser pictures and you will see it's close to the current 5D. That means better build quality, different ergonomics and better sealing than the amateur bodies provide. Still I can see why James would not have his EOSfun soon

No medium format from Canon this Kina guys! Sorry for the MF adapts It would not be EOSfun anyway since medium format would definitely get a bigger mount and not carry the EOS name.

James is a nice guy who is unhappy why companies do not do what they could and should to make their customers happy. The world is still not so far. We have to become happy with what we get. That will be a good feeling. For us. And them. And they will stop thinking about sales and success and calculation. They will encounter that they are allowed tu fullfill ... pleasure. And than they will present it to us. Because it makes them happy.

Yes, to lose the EOS name would require you to find another tagline.

OTOH reading his profile he could be shareholder since he owns almost every Canon camera It's strange, he doesn't really radiate the EOSfun indeed

From the Luminous Landscape review

and at base ISO, the noise levels are very good

He provides no information on high ISO performance.

Comparing the Imaging Resource "still life" images from the 5D and A900 (resized to 12MP) at ISO 800, the A900 is clearly noisier than the currrent 5D. The difference is greater at 1600. 24MP does not mean much if you can't print large or use a crop of a small part of an image to make an 8 x 10.

That is too bad for us -- not much reason here for canon to lower prices on FF camers

I doubt there are any NDAs. At least outside of Canon vendors, Askey at dpreview made it clear he doesn't have a camera. The clumsy Canon advertising appears to have been done in-house.

I agree. I think it's just fanciful grist for the rumor mill.

I'm surprised the A900 images aren't better. Nikon will do a better job with software cleaning up the noise, but clearly the sensor is not as accurate as Canon's. The softness in all the images suggests either a strong AA or the are running some noise reduction even at lower ISO. The new 5D will be worth more than the a900. I will give a written guarantee if asked.

Canon owners aren't the target market for the new Sony. I haven't looked at at Sony forums, but I bet many ex-Minolta users will be happy they finally have a FF, high res camera. And for 99% of people shooting at ISO400 or less, the A900 will be great.

Having said that, I do feel that maybe Sony have overextended themselves - they should have taken Nikon's lead and tried 12-14mp first, which would have been plenty enough for the vast majority of users.

As to the price of the 5DII, I really haven't got a clue as to where Canon want to market this thing - is it going to be a straight 5D follow on, or intended to occupy a higher 'slot' within their line-up. All I could say for certain is that it won't have less than 15.1mp. I'm not yet convinced it will be 21mp though.

Speaking purely for myself, my most-desired "pro feature" would be the lowest damn price possible.
