The imo standard semipro price ranges from € 800 to € 1300. Based on the price I would call 5D "high end semi pro" :-).
Comparing it with any Rebel wich one you are talking about? There was never one that had or has now that IQ, that pros shoot with it. And as far I remember the last 3 Rebels still have plastic bodys. I would compare it to Canons semypro range. Your so called crippled features are imo the same the xxD series offered 3 years ago. + a much better IQ and ISO capabilities based on

I don't base the definition of a pro body or semi-pro on price, I base it on features and functionality. The 5D has an excellent sensor, but the camera is lacking in other areas. The fps and AF are essentially at the intro or "rebel" level.
The camera was , (i believe) intentionally "crippled" at 3fps and mediocre AF to keep it from competing with the mark2 series. The AF may work fine for you, and in the end that's all that matters, but for many(including myself), it doesn't.
I think the accuracy of the AF is fine, but I have found for birds, my primary subject, the only point that I can reliably count on, is the center. Ironically, I find that the 5D is a better flight camera than the 40D, the 40D AF works fine for big and slow, but for something fast , it just doesn't cut it.
That's one of the really appealing things about Nikon right now(IMO), they appear to offer fully functional cameras for any use, and not just for the top model.
Hopefully, your prediction will materialize, and Canon will produce something really good. The concern I have is that they are always "looking over their shoulder" at their 1D series.
A lot of people seem to be excited about HD video capability, and I'm not sure why?

You can't "cripple" a camera unless it had a feature and that feature was disabled. The only body that I know of that had features crippled was the original digital Rebel, aka the 300D.

Ironically, I've found that my 5D tracks better than my 40D also. The 40D's AF advantages are in extremely dark situations, and when using the perimeter AF points. Unfortunately, the 40D's high-ISO performance isn't quite up to the level of the 5D so that low-light AF advantage isn't all that useful for me.

Why would you shoot that at 12800. It's very good light.

Umm.... 'cause you're testing the performance at different ISOs?

And with slightly less pixel density.

To demonstrate the high ISO capabilities - no other reason.

I must say that the iso 12800 shot is impressive, even if it is not-so-rational to shoot high iso in good lighting to really test the iso. Would love to see iso 12800 street shot at f/1.4 1/50!

The Chinese brush set at ISO 12800 is noisy.

Let us just hope that the 5D replacement at ISO 12800 will be as good as the 5D at ISO 400!

I think the 5D just needs fast glass to shine.
It's no sports camera with standard glass. Give it a 70-200 2.8 or 300 2.8, and the AF picks up. The 40D is the same, but focusses quicker with slower glass (though not by very much, as to be fairly negligible).

Yes, the ISO 12800 image of the Chinese brush set is still too noisy for me. I expect the new sensor on the 5D replacement to look like the ISO 800 version!

Hehe, if the 5d replacement has an iso 12800 that looks as the current 5d's iso 1600, I'll be as happy as a rat on christmas eve!

Hehe, yes you are! God jul til deg også!

I have had a monthly saving scheme to have enough money for the new 5d, I think I had enough money already in february, so now the 5d-account is soon large enough for an used 1ds Mark III, but i hope my patience will pay off

This week you will know! But a used 1dsMkIII, hmmmm that's not a bad idea... Just wait. Prices of the 1DsmkIII, well something will happen with that too (just a wild guess, but I believe so). Have EOSfun!

Because the 17-55 only needs to cover a sensor half the size of a 35mm camera...?

1600 imo is phantastic, 3200 looks great to me sure not worse than what I saw from D700.

Huh! If that is portable to another stop or 1.5 in FF, the new camera is a "winer"

Agreed. It also got me to thinking how far ahead of film we are at higher ISO now. Sure you can make some arguments for the quality film under good light / low ISO (although I rarely bother with film as digital is easier and obviously has its advantages too), but I think in low light / high ISO conditions digital is now worlds ahead.
