AMEN!!!! Give me 16.7mp and I'll sell both my 5D's to buy 1 of those.
Hi Brother-in-Christ,
You will get more than 16.7MP. However it will no way compare in features with their flagship MK3 21MP Ds. It will be a very, VERY basic camera. This is due to a last minute change by the panic Canon team when they realised what their competitors were coming up with. They were looking in the book "Art of war" by "Sonshi" (Japanese word for the famous Chinese renown military genius Sun Tze) to see what to do next. Maybe they have found a solution. Then maybe not ...
I rather disagree with your prediction, Venus.
First because Canon were obviously working on 5D replacement before they worked on 40D replacement, simply in light of when the camera to be replaced was released. So they had ample time.
Second, because all the advance signs of relative importance show that, for Canon, the 50D is clearly the lesser event (choice of a more anonymous release date, no teasers).
Third, because 50D shows that Canon, as is the rule in the electonics industry, and a camera body is an electronic product, each new generation must offer more price competitiveness than the one it replaces. This will apply to 5DII as well.
Fourth, because, from an electronics point of view, the cost (not the price, the cost) of a DigicIV is probably the same or less than that of a DigicIII, and the new sensor probably does not cost more than the old one did when 5D was released.
So there is no reason for 5DII to be very basic if its price is pretty much where that of 5D was 3 years ago. And the features they need to add to 5D no matter what (dust cleaning, 50D-type LCD), cost peanuts.
This is shown clearly by Sony with their Alpha 900 and Nikon with their D700 (lower resolution doesn't save Nikon that much cost. Certainly not much on the sensor, a little on the Expeed side, where they can get by with lower computing power).
I would therefore expect D5II to be priced around the 3000US$ level with an improved spec list compared to 5D. Unless the earlier rumour (no longer active it seems) is true, i.e. that Canon will actually realease 2 new bodies, one very basic with unbeatable IQ-for-the-money, and one more feature-rich.
Let's see next week who read the tea leaves right.

A grip isn't that important, I think. I didn't even buy one for the 5D. I'd like a built in one, but it's more that it made me wonder whether that's a 3D with a few almost-pro features like advanced AF, for example. In which case I'd be sure that there also would be a 5D2 or 7D, at least next spring.
Besides, Canon shouldn't tease us so much, and then leave us on our own without any resolution.
I hope the grip isn't integrated... I prefer the camera to be as compact as possible... isn't one of the advantage of the 5D its smaller size relative to the 1-series?
I base my prediction on Canon's advertisement utilizing the moon's light to reveal the new camera. 9-15-08 is a Full Moon and 9-16-08 is a National Holiday in Japan celebrating the Autumn Moon. My guess it will be announced on 9-15-08 prior to the Autmn Moon celebration.
You are right! Japanese culture is based on Chinese Culture. If you look at Japanese words, most of them are Chinese in origin. Legend has it that long, long ago, an emperor wanted a herb that when eaten will lead to immortality. So he sent his subordinates to search all China for the 3,000 of the brightest and most capable of young men and women to the island of Japan to search for this herb.It was said that they never found this herb and as a result they never returned for fear of retribution. Of course the 3,000 young men and women weren't the brightest for it was an impossible task. But they bright all right ; the brightest still remained in China.
So to the Japanese, mid-autumn is an auspicious occasion. It is a time of the mooncake festival! Enjoy with Chinese tea it's a fantastic experience. Come on try it whilst we wait for news of the 5D replacement.

There's purportedly an image of the new camera, with a mystery new lens. Does look like a 24L f1.4 Mk2 but you can't tell for sure.
If that's the case don't know whether I should be happy the 24L is being updated, or unhappy that my Mk1's value is about to nosedive! There are rumours elsewhere that the 35mm f1.4L will be replaced with a Mk2 - if so I might save up for one in a year or two.
"...I can show you this image I got from our marketing department. It’s not very clear, I know, the marketing people insisted on taking this picture with a 1D Mark III in AI Servo mode."

ummm...ok...
Japanese culture is influenced by the continent-yes...based on...no.
And 9/15 is Senior Citizens day, not full moon day.
But the press conference is still on the 17th. They have apparently invited people. So I don't think we need a lunar calendar, the Zodiac, or the study of ancient tradition to figure this one out.
Getting back to the price for a moment, I don't think it bodes well that the 5D is still selling new for around US$2300. After the spring rebates, the 40d stayed down in the low to mid $900 range - which makes sense since retailers probably knew (or had very good sense) that the 40d was to be replaced at the $1300 - $1400 price range.
However, the 5D quickly went back to $2300 or so, and is still there. Retailers have to know by now that the 5D replacement is days away, and yet the 5d prices haven't dropped any more - in fact amazon's price has gone UP in the last few weeks. My pessimistic conclusion is that canon is so convinced of the replacement's superiority that they are going to price it higher than the d700/a900. My expectation is somewhere around the 5d's original price, say $3200 to $3500.
