Getting back to the price for a moment, I don't think it bodes well that the 5D is still selling new for around US$2300. After the spring rebates, the 40d stayed down in the low to mid $900 range - which makes sense since retailers probably knew (or had very good sense) that the 40d was to be replaced at the $1300 - $1400 price range.

I always assumed any 5D replacement would be close to the 5D's original price. Canon did that with the 1DxMK2 replacements and previous cameras. I would not be surprised that after Photokina the FF lineup has a new camera at $3200 and the 5D at $2500. If it is all that has been rumored I would have no problem paying $3200 for the new camera.

Retailers have to know by now that the 5D replacement is days away, and yet the 5d prices haven't dropped any more - in fact amazon's price has gone UP in the last few weeks. My pessimistic conclusion is that canon is so convinced of the replacement's superiority that they are going to price it higher than the d700/a900. My expectation is somewhere around the 5d's original price, say $3200 to $3500.

You seem to be assuming that the retailers know something about what's coming, which they don't. I think it's more about supply and demand. Supply of the 5D is going down and demand remains high, so the prices go up.

5D has been discontinued about a month ago... Ben Horne, who works at a camera store, already confirmed this awhile ago.

Most camera stores know what's going on. Retailers such as Best Buy, CLUELESS. But the local camera store, they know. They know when they order a camera such as a 5D and don't get it. They now something new is coming.

I am happy if Canon is convinced of superiority of 5D2 vs. d700/a900. That is exactly what I expect IQ wise, and that is for me the primary reason to add a 5D2 to my 5D as a better macro camera. With insects, there is not enough time to change lenses (and macro flashes) after spotting a target.

If the successor of 1D4 turns out to be equally IQ superior to the D3 with at least matching AF performance, then I might replace my 40D with it as an action camera, providing I have accumulated enough cash by next spring or whenever the AF performance of 1D4 has been independently verified.

B&H still shows the 5D as being in stock, though. Maybe the announcement has to wait until they are sold out. Everyone buy a 5D.

I am getting tempted. I can't stand all this hype.

I think the point is 5D is NOT produced any lonnger. Neither delivered. But people still want it. So the dealers keep the price. Thats different with 40D. It will be sold next to 50D during the next half year (or sth.).

Ditto. My thoughts are the same, and I will be more than happy to pay $3,200+ for a 3D i.e. a hybrid of the 5D and the 1D.

Here, too (when 5D is a 5DII with e.g. 16MP and sensors ISO 6400)
I am in good hope for that. I mentioned those wish specs before and Eosfun told me I will be happy with what comes.

Lets see what we actually know about this new camera. There are currently 4 alternatives
a) Canon will release a disappointing camera,
b) Canon will release a great camera,
c) Canon will release something that blows the competition out of the water (unlikely and specs noted in (brackets))
d) Canon releases 2 cameras a 3D and a 7D (unlikely and specs of 7D noted in (brackets))

I will assume that Canon is not yanking our chain with the striptease moon thing.

We know for certain that the Camera will be/have
a DSLR
black
Canon written on the front in white
Shutter release, four buttons and a wheel on the top left

It will probably have
3” LCD with 920,000 pixels
Dust cleaning system
Live view with movable contrast detect AF and other 50D stuff
No popup flash
AF micro adjustment
No print button

It will likely
be a 5D replacement or
two cameras a 3D [between 5D and 1D] and a 7D [ff 50D]. If so, the 7D gets released now, the 3D later
be announced wthin the next couple of weeks

It may have between
15 to 24 (30) MP
IQ lower than, equal to, (or better than) the current 5D.
9 to (51) AF points with 9 to (18) being cross type for f 5.6 or better and 1 to (8) of these having additional AF assist points with better distribution of AF points
3 to (5) focusing screens
ISO (50) 100 to 12800 (useable to 25600)
Noise Free ISO 100 to 1600 (3200)
14 to (16) bit RAW
1 to 3 sRAW formats
1 [3fps] or (2 [6fps]) digic IV (or 1 Digic V) processors
Cost between ($2300) and $3500

It may or may not have
Built in (GPS)
(Voice tag) capability for each photo and folder
(HD video mode with HDMI out)
Some weather sealing
The same or different batteries and BG
A camera level indicator in the viewfinder

After the certain and probable categories, we do not have much to go on. Actually we really don’t know squat about this camera. Have I missed anything?

regards

Denis

The Canon 5D is a legend, there are more wedding photograhers using this single model camera than all the other camera models and brands put together. When it was launched it met with a luke warm reception because of it's initial price. Over time it came down and it seems that every one has one now. It was built with IQ in mind but it cut costs in just about every other area (AF ect).
Just about every serious camera brand has of late tried to copy and improve on canon's winning formular, the D3/D700 and A900 spring to mind.
Canon is about to re-imagine and upgrade this camera. Sure it'll have a load of new features and MP. But what will really be interesting is if Canon really can upgrade this accidental icon of modern photography. I say accidental because i really do not belive that Canon knew that they had build such an excellent camera 3 years ago. It was (and still is) a low light meister, it's ultimate IQ is still unmatched and it's sales figures are seriously impressive for a camera that started so badly.
I look at the 5DII as one would look at a 2nd album from a promising new band. Will it rock or will it roll? If Canon make it rock than it'll truely be a masterpiece of engineering, if it's a lemon then my original fears could well be proved to be true.

Sequels usually aren't as good as the original. Lets hope this will be an exception.
