Dom, as far as I know, the XT always shoots ISO 400 when in sports mode. In auto ISO mode, 50D can go as far as 1600. When using "auto" modes, you should always expect some surprises from the camera.

The different exposure is caused by the evaluative mode and the different landscape: the XT image has more highlights than the 50D image (more waves and the sky in the background), hence the underexposure seen in the XT picture. It is all about the exposure algorithm, that is more or less the same on all DSLRs.

I agree... The XT image has more darker tones than lighter tones and the 50D image has more lighter tones than darker tones. This would at least explain the different exposures with evaluative metering to some degree. But you can't rule out that the cameras meter (slightly) different in similair conditions. But I would expect the 50D to do a better job anyway.

Another thing: what is up with all these purple blotches in the 50D image?

I returned it because I kept getting the Error 99 problem that has been mentioned around here over the last couple weeks. Better to be safe then sorry.....

my 50D with 1.0.1 is always shooting over exposed, unless I go all manual.
I have to step down the exposure 2 step down to make it viable.
That's with IS lens, 17-55mm and 100-400 L...

picture quality isn't a huge step foward from a Rebel XT so far. But i'm used to have DXo correcting my pictures and it's not available now on the 50D.

I think they released it way too fast, with poor factory calibration.

Dominic,
If there is enough light today I am going to take a few more shots with my 50D to see how it is doing after resting the weekend. I did not mention it my earlier post but I also thought I was having exposure problems. It seems that if I need an ISO of 400 on my 40D, I will need only 200 on the 50D - this is a approx. reference by me. I normally setup in manual mode and then I will go to AV for wildlife shots or I will stay in manual. If I still have problems I will call my the local camera shop where I got the camera and see about returning it or I will send it back to Canon. Canon makes lemons and I might have gotten one - a new set of shots will tell. Steve W

this morning I shooted some quick images for fun, with Safety Shift on(C.Fn1: 6-1), and to my surprise it allow the camera to override shutter speed in TV mode! I had it set to 1/1200 and half-pressing the trigger would make it drop.
It dropped quite a lot actually, down to 1/250? but I had to go so I coulnd't see the results.

C.FnIV: 1-2 had me to press the AF-ON to get autofocus active, I wasn't expecting that.

I swapped TV for AV in my previous post...i'm actually more minded to use TV to "freeze the frame"

Is there a way to get the camera AF to behave like the sport mode but in TV settings?
Sport mode have the AFpoint lighted and beeping every second or so with half-pressed trigger, so I know it's working and alive.
So far I couldn't this feature elsewhere...

-alameda, yours seems to get way more light then mine... what about if you try it in some automatic mode(i know i know, they are there not to be used). Just pretend you spinned the wheel blindly

Hey EOS20, when you say you kept getting the error, can you tell us how many you got, out of how many shots approximately? Also, were you using a fully charged battery, or partly/mostly drained one?

Jo

Thanks Maverick! Maybe Canon learned a lesson from the 1DMIII and jumped on this one. We can only hope..........

It's a nice camera without the "errors". I got one err99 on my 5th shot.

I got 5 Error 99's, Out of about 30 shots!

The battery was full charged on all occasions (I used one of my spares batteries from my 300D when I first got the camera and was waiting for the new one to charge, And that one had been charged because I went out a few days earlier, And It also happened with the brand new battery that had been fully charged).

The Error 99's happened with my 24-105 (About 2 months old) And with my 100-400 (About a year old). I had 3 errors using the 24-105, And 2 with the 100-400.

FW 1.0.3 corrects a overexposure issue... I don't know if this is the exact same issue that you have, but you might want to try it out

Imaging-Resource has been working on their 50D review. Here is the page containing some NR tests (JPEG). They didn't equalize the files (go get them Brainiac ) but in their conclusion they basically say that the 50D loses more details at higher ISO's than the 40D and that the D90 has a cleaner NR. The D300 is on par with the D90 in their opinion.

Interesting.

I think you have tried both the 40D and 50D... if I remember previous posts.

I am upgrading from an XTI and having a hard time deciding between the 40D and the 50D.

In your opinion, if the difference in the price is not a big deal for me...do you think the 50D is a better buy. I do all kinds of stuff and what is most important to me is IQ.

I have tried both cams on numorous occasions. I shot with them and played with the RAW files. I also collected a bunch of RAW files from various review sites and played with them also.

Based on that, I would say both cameras have similair noise performance, although I would give the 40D the advantage (when shooting RAW, converting with ACR/LR and uprezzing the 40D files to 15MP). The 50D files have the potential to show more detail. But you have to use good resolving lenses and proper technique to make that happen. But this matters most when you view 100% or print VERY BIG anyway. For small to medium sized prints you won't notice any difference in resolution/detail or even noise for that matter.

I wouldn't want to use both cams above ISO1600. I would use the 40D with a little more confidence at ISO1600 than the 50D though. It is my experience that the 50D is less forgiving when underexposing than the 40D regarding noise. Also, at higher ISO's (sometimes starting already at ISO1600) and when the conditions are "right", the 50D shows ugly purple colored blotches (mainly in the medium to lighter tones). There have also been reports of ISO banding at the highest ISO values with the 50D.

I'll be honest... If the 40D had all the new features of the 50D, I would have bought the 40D without a doubt. IMO they went over the top with 15MP's on a 1.6x crop sensor. But the 50D gives excellent IQ at lower ISO's when using good resolving lenses. Potentially better than the 40D IMO. The new LCD and micro adjustment features are also very cool. But you didn't ask about features.

I don't have any experience with the 40D vs 50D regarding JPEG's or DPP. So you will have to ask somebody else about that

yep, loaded the firmware yesterday night but haven't got time to fiddle with...

Canon seems to minimize the Err99 down to a "rare" problem when it's quite present around here...
So I hope that the overexposure problems is of the same kind, so I'm likely to get better pictures on the 1.0.3.
