Just shot a wedding this weekend and used my 20D with a 50mm f/1.4 and the new 50D with the 135 f/2L. I've edited the images, but hopefully the gallery would be useful to those interested in seeing what the 50D can and can't do in the field. I found it to be pretty good all round, and though not as good as a 5D quite, it was pretty useful in low light. Certainly more keepers than with the 20D and I put this squarely down to AF rather than ISO performance. If you'd like to see the gallery, drop me a PM, I nearly posted it here but given the obsession with this camera, the images would end up EVERYWHERE and frankly, I don't want a clients wedding pictures doing the rounds on the web.
I like how Amazon has its list price set at 1579.00, and then they tell you your saving 180 bucks by getting it at 1399. When it's actually listed on Canons site for 1399.
I picked up the "KIT" at Best Buy yesterday. So I got yet another 28-135mm lens. (Are they easy to sell?) Using the Best Buy 12% off "rewards" coupon, the total was around $1550 with tax, out the door, including the 28-135mm lens. Firmware v1.02

hello all,
Just upgraded my 20d to the 50D. hope delivery will be very soon. cant wait.
anyone changed straight from 20d to 50d. if so how much better are your images. both in depth, colour and image quality..... am just looking for something to keep me going for a few days till i get mine..
also cant wait to try the 8gb ducatti extreme cards.
Jason
Over the 20D you are going to enjoy the focus speed and accuracy, frames per second increase, the feel of it in your hands, the larger and sharper rear LCD, picture style options, and more.
I have not a 50D yet so that's as far as I can go. I did go from a 20d to a 40D.
therock, Thanks for that....am so looking forward to getting my 70-200L 2.8 and macro 100mm 2.8 on it. you realise im going to have to take all my macro shots again... im gonna be a real happy snapper. Got sweaty palms just thinking about it.
i believe i can re-use the batteries in my 20D. if so may invest in a battery grip.
i almost went for the 5d2 but have been talked out of it because of the type of shooting i do. macro and wildlife. need the reach. will have to see if my 70-200 plus 1.4 tc will be enough. before i couldnt really crop and still get good large prints. now i should be able to. if i cant its gonna be a while before i can afford more L glass.

+1.
I just went from the 20D to the 50D. It is a nicer body--a bit more hefty, which for my hands is a good thing. It feels much more solid with my battery grip (in fact, unlike the 20D, it works reliably with the grip). Focus speed/accuracy is a big step up. I was getting maybe a 20% keeper rate on my sports shots (kids' football). Now, I'd put it at more than 40%. Still nowhere near a 1D series, but much better than the 20D. I haven't really put the high ISO to the test yet, so no comments there. I will be doing so shortly, when hockey season starts in earnest for my boys. The extra pixels to crop is certainly nice -- can reach a bit farther across the field, now. Metering seems more reliable, too.
Finally, the LCD simply blows you away, coming from the tiny 20D screen. It is awesome.
RAMcG,
yes, couldnt reliably use the screen to decide to keep on not. must be great using the live view and zoom mode to check focus accuratly before taking a shot. also does it have highligh saving feature (cant remember what its called) if it has it will save alot of overexposing problems.
looks like im going to have to go back to the drawingboard and read the instuction manual...
did it take you long to get used to the new features?

did it take you long to get used to the new features?
For me, not really. The basics have not changed at all--unless I've got consistent lighting, I stick the camera on AV and allow the camera to meter (with some EC when needed). Things like EC, focus point selection, ISO, focusing mode, etc., are exactly the same as on the 20D.
For the new items, the new menu system is pretty intuitive, so it doesn't take too long to figure everything out.
I turned off some of the more esoteric options, like the highlight function. I'm now just itching to get back to shooting RAW and processing through LR.

..and to boot, Live Cashback does not apply to the auction. Boo.
it does. it does. buy it now with paypal is there.
you WILL get your $200 back on $17,000. It's a steal!
poor store must wonder why none of the recent 50D's they put up are getting any hits....
weird that they did the type on both auctions they put up that day,
don't drink and ebay as they say
FYI, KEH has the 50D body only (new) for $1349, but it looks like they sold out today. I ordered mine yesterday and should get it tomorrow. We'll see what firmware it has.
