Any comments on the AF compared to the 40D's, specifically to fast action sports or in very low light conditions? Thanks
There are probably differences that can be measured in milliseconds by scientific equipment. I imagine the new processor must be slightly faster. However I can't tell any diff: AF in my 50D seems the same as my 40D. If you're not into the high rez LCD or extra MP, it's probably not a good idea to upgrade. In most other aspects it's exactly the same camera.
Haven't even taken out of the box from Amazon I'm so underwhelmed from what I've read but I'm not happy with the 40D (after shooting 1DMk3s last year). I have a 5DMkII pre-ordered too, but neither camera is a fit.

Just curious... What is it that make the 40D and 5D2 not a fit?
I haven't shot any low-light sports yet with the 50D, but I did shoot a mid-day soccer game in AI-Servo with 70-200... The 50D did very well. Better than I expected. What I am starting to notice...If you use fast glass, the AF system on the 50D works very well. Slower glass does not do it any favors though and the 1D's will beat it every time when using slower glass.
I shoot with a 5D, 50D and MKIII. Had a MKIIN prior. 5DMkII on preorder.

The gold wears off the contacts pretty quickly if you're a frequent lens changer. I have older EOS bodies with the copper showing--gold gone--and they never give error messages. The less-gold story sounds unreasonable as the cause for errors.
+1
I'm going to raise the BS flag on insufficient gold contain causing the error as well, i changed lenses very often and after 115K shots the gold coating was almost completely gone on my 20D, never experience data corruption or error of any kind.
For all the new 50D owners, have you notice any problem with any of them outer focus points? how accurate and consistent are they in comparison to 5D or 30/40D?
if possible can someone please try vertical (portrait) position and test both upper left and right corner focus points?

Second picture posted above was takne with outer focus point pointed at her face.
And the shot looks like the center point was used....
I think i will dig into this a bit deeper
I have mine in on Tue 07Oct and it is now approx. 200+ shots mainly with 24-105L, 50 1.4, Siggy 12-24 & 135L. No ERR99 at all and works perfectly out of the box without MA
Will try out my 400 5.6L, 100 Macro & 70-200 2.8L IS tomorrow.

If the photos of the young woman were posted in answer to this, I don't think they're a good test of the AF points. A static image in decent light with areas of high contrast or intersecting lines are pretty easy for most camera's AF sensors.

Like I said earlier, 50D AF appears to be about the same as 40D AF and that includes all the AF points. With that said, I mainly shoot vertical and found both the 40D and 50D outer points pretty good. I know there's always someone that thinks they're shit but that hasn't been my experience.
I bought my 5OD two weeks ago in Brussels. I experienced the same problem as Tonyhart, on the first day. I had to remove the battery, wait a while and replace it before it would work again. The SLR also stopped suddenly after 20 minutes use of LiveView.

I got my 50D from Best Buy last Sun (they weren't even on display, yet! I had to ask them to grab it from the back). Firmware 1.0.2. Shot over 500 shots so far on it. I haven't received any errors! Still not liking crop factor as much as my 5D, but glad to have ~7FPS back after selling my 40D to upgrade. Other than the awesome LCD upgrade and a few more megapixels, this camera is pretty much a 40D to me.
I might bite the bullet after work tonight. The local Best Buy near me is now showing stock. (figured good chance for Firmware 1.02, plus newer stock, less likely Error 99?). Just wish they had the Body Only and not another 28-135mm kit.
