Ralph, please don't go to this link. Too much EOSfun has been known to kill, you know. Be careful, first prepare an oxygen tank and a defibrillator. Thanks, and take care!
Personally, I think the ones from the D90 look much better. The ones from the 50D are frankly pretty bad. Who knows if it's due to lens, technique etc.? Hopefully the softness does not indicate a flaw with the sensor, or merely that the resolution was pushed too far this time. Still waiting for RAW samples.

I think they should only post sample images with high quality glass. The nikon shots are using the new 18-105mm kit lens which MAY be a strike against the images right off the bat.
I'm trying to figure out the iso 3200 alligator shot if there is a lot of detail lost or not. Heavy NR in camera no doubt but it looks pretty good.....Hard to tell.
The Canon 50D shots have some good glass included but it looks to me like Canon has upped the AA filter even further than the 40d making high iso images really soft. The 1600 iso shot with the 50mm f1.4 looks really clean but is really soft.

Are you kidding? Perfectly balanced, real life colors. Very good resolution. And look at the ISO6400 shot!!! There are always people that prefer crayon over-saturated Nikon images, of course. That's why there is the Saturation slider

I do see some banding. It's faint but it's there. I still think this shot looks fabulous. Hopefully the banding is a preproduction thing.
I can't tell much without comparison. I like the nuetral files. Better to add saturation and effects than remove. I'm sure there are jpg setting that produce snappier files.
This is probably production firmware, but I expect the need for future releases.
I found both pics to be not so great -- at low ISO -- although with the Canon the 24-105 appeared to perform better than the 70-300. I thought the high ISO shots with the 50D were quite good. For the D90 shots it was hard to tell because of the subject and composition.
I dont understand why DPREVIEW doesnt include SOME shots that were shot the same (subject, position, ISO, etc). Everyone knows there will be comparisons between these two ( I know I am looking to choose either one). Why not compare them on the same shot?
I have to be honest: I am slightly disappointed by the banding in the shadows in the iso 6400 fruit shot and the colour blotches at the bottom of the leaf close-up. I had hoped that Canon was going to introduce clever noise reduction that would at least make banding a thing of the past. They really are playing catch-up with Nikon in the NR department. I'm probably just expecting too much, as I'm used to full frame.
I think it would be nice if they included some full res shots that could be downloaded and viewed.
I do like the Video files from the D90 but very memory hungry though.
