Is 50D's IQ better than currect 5D?

Once the 50D is in stores, that's a question I plan on answering for myself.

The price of a new 50D may be comparable to a used 5D especially once a 5D successor is released.

I've been thinking about that too. It would be hard to go to a smaller vf, and your lenses get a lengthening downgrade but apart from that, why not? The price of the 5D2 will be pretty crucial.

Did somebody read or found information about if 50D is able to display a 100% crop of a token image by one thumpclick and reading it from raw data?

Are you drunk? Of course this is possible. You would not be able to have any kind of EOSfun from a 50D without. It's not in the specs though Just press the shutterbutton (but not with the thumb )!

but so far nobody has been able to have that sort of esofun with any canon camera unless it has been a P&S so why are you 100% confident they finally fixed this?

Well, here's a comparison of both. These are the differences, anything omitted is more or less the same on both:

D300 vs 50D

MP: 12 vs 15
AF: 51 vs 9
AF cross sensors: 15 vs 9 (although that's a bit misleading due to the spread of the 15)
AF EV range: -1 to +19 vs -0.5 to +18
AF assists: proper lamp vs disco strobe
Spot meter: 2% vs 3.8%
EV compensation: 5 stops vs 2 stops
ISO: 100-6400 vs 100-12800
VF: 100% @ 0.94x vs 95% @ 0.95x
fps: 6 vs 6.3 or 8 vs 6.3 if you have the D300 grip
JPG buffer: 100 shots vs 90 shots
Flash commander
...Show more

You can't throw a comparison of cameras into the conversation without mentioning lenses; at least if you expect a balanced conversation. It's the whole package that matters. I left Nikon for three reasons: full frame, high iso and lens lineup. Nikon has eliminated the first two but not the last and that is THE most important factor. Camera bodies come and go. Lenses last a lifetime. For the wildlife shooter there is no comparison between the two. Canon has better options. I don't even see how this is debatable. 100-400 USM vs. Nikon's 80-400 that isn't AF-S. Also, where's Nikon's version of the 400 f/5.6? And, have you seen the prices of those long Nikkor super telephotos? They are about $2 thousand USD higher than Canon. Candidly, if Nikon had an 80-400 with AF-S they'd have gotten a lot more Canon shooters. But, they don't. Kudos to Nikon for raising the bar on cameras but they are seriously lacking in the glass department for wildlife shooters.

Just my opinion . First off I might be what you would call a advanced amateur so take my opinion ligtly . The worst Dslr of today is far better than anything I ever had when I first sarted out , Im ready to upgrade to the 50d as soon as it lives up to its hype which I hope it does .Lots of features I was wishing the 40d had . Also a camera in my mind is only as good as the glass and the users knowledge of using it . My primary lenses are Canon 70 200 4 and 400 5.6 . and I think they work great with the 40d. So if it proves itself Ill buy it. If not Im happy with my 40d .I call that a win win situation

"win win" sounds good.
I just compared the 50D ISO 1600 sample image with a series of Iso 100 up to 3200 of a friends 40D.
It matches ISO 800 really good (1 stop). But of course with the additional 50% MP increase, what seems to me to be excellent! So I guess the 1 - 1 1/2 stops increasement announced is believeable. Would love to see an ISO 3200 pic. The D300 ISO 3200 exampels did not convince me. I am still waiting for 5D MK II.
This could be a camera blowing my mind away. If its not or not affordable (for my small pocket) the 50D will be it.

So "win win" for me, too.

The image comparison I would like to see is RAW vs. RAW. JPEG camparisons may, or may not, be influenced by differences in noise reduction (High ISO NR).

should i get the 50D or wait for the 60D?

I know this was in jest but for those people who keep seeing new upgrades and styles coming out each year I really think they should wait for the 240D which is due in Oct of 2024. That camera will have built in GPS for the best spot to take a photo. Also it's anti gravity lifter will allow for those great overhead.

Of course the 250D does promise a full range sensor.

Did you compare taking pictures with the 40d in a similar situation or under comparable circumstances?
Not of a rally car necessarily, of course, but at least under similar lighting for comparison purposes.

I'm asking because that pic was taken at iso 1600 and f8, but even then the shutter speed was still 1/8000!
That means there was a lot of light available.
A scene like that was prone to provide a low noise picture anyway.

I believe most cameras would do well under those specific circumstances, at least noise wise.
I could be wrong, though...

Looking forward to your reply, since I'm ordering a 50d online right now...
