Nice Retro. How do you like your V850?
Hi Gary, thanks . The V850 is a very good scanner, but it has its little cons, too. First, for large and medium format it is excellent - IQ is superb and scanning at 3200 dpi is quite fast. The Epson scanner software wasn't updated recently, but it works fine and is in some aspects a bit better than SilverFast 8 when it comes to sharpening and dust removal. Where the V850 gave me some trouble in the beginning was for 35 mm based negatives - I formerly used the Plustek 8200i scanner where the files came out crisp sharp without additional PP. The V850 requires a certain amount of PP sharpening in the scanner software to get to the same results. The medium value in the Epson scanner software is about the right setting, Silverfast 8 uses an arbitrary sharpening scale which needs more sharpening than I was formerly used to with this software. The Epson software has a thumbnail view which automatically does some PP to the scanned image which I don't like - it cuts automatically off quite a large border of 35 mm negatives within the film holder. Better to use the normal mode instead in the Epson software and crop the frames of each negative myself. This is a bit cumbersome process and I wish Epson would release an upgrade of its software just for this.
Another simple source of unsharpness is an added supposedly beneficial design of the new film holders - height adjustable feet to accommodate for different slide/film strip thickness. It turned out often a source of issues in my case - the feet easily misadjust by moving the positions. I always make sure now that the feet are in the lowest position before inserting the film holder in the scanner!

Such great info - thanks. I saw one locally for a very good deal and may try it out. I also own the 8200i for 35mm but now am shooting much more 120. My V500 is very outdated and I feel I can get better scans if I upgrade. What are the benefits of the V850 compared to the V800?

Not quite sure about the differences between V800 and V850 - I simply got a very good deal recently as refurbished V850 model for $800, so I went for it. I should also mention it works well for document scans, too.
Is there a film thread?
Is there a Leica thread.
I'm looking at a Leica M3 bit don't know what lens I can out on it. Is. 50 the only thing I can use.
Is there a list of M3 lens

You’re in the film thread currently. There’s a very active Leica thread as well in the Alternative board. You can put any lens you want on and M3 you just have to use an external viewfinder if it’s not a 50,90 or 135mm lens. There’s also goggled 35mm lenses which were avaialable specifically for the M3.
