Thanks. That roll of film was from 2006 using a Minolta XG 1 & 45/2. never once touched the negs until last night and it was straight from the sleeves to the tray. guess a blower is in order.
now i'm confused about the possibilities with 3rd party scan software...
You'll want a anti-static brush and either a rocket blower or a can of duster. Then if your scanner has it (which I thought the Minolta Elite 5400 did), turn on digital ICE to remove what's left automatically.
Why are you confused about the 3rd party scan apps? I don't think silverfast is available for that scanner. Vuescan is pretty much your 3rd party choice.

I took my Speed Graphic + Aero Ektar out "in the field" for the first time last weekend and shot 18 sheets of Arista Edu 100 and 8 of Portra 160 VC at the Thai New Years celebration at the local temple in my city. For the B&W I used Grafmatics, which are very convenient. Freestyle decided to take 3 days to get my order shipped out, so I plunged ahead and developed the Arista in HC-110 Dilution H rather than the Diafine I'd ordered (my exposure was kind of all over the place, I really need to get a handheld meter or one of those hot shoe ones). I was also trying out the Combi-Plan developing tank for the first time, I've got to say it beats the pants off of tray developing. It's pretty convenient with the Grafmatics; the Combi Plan holds six sheets, as does each Grafmatic magazine. Makes processing/keeping track of everything in the darkroom pretty simple.
The color stuff I'm going to send out after another shoot next weekend, looking forward to seeing how it comes out!
Here's a shot of my gear bag, the flash handle makes a nice grip so I packed it along...Show more →
Very nice The speedgraphic is a nice camera to use for lenses without a shutter! I use it for lots of various barrel lenses. I do have an aero Ektar as well, but the threads are damaged so I can't really mount it very well Haven't gotten around to making a mount for it. Looks like it might be worth my while to do so

Thanks! It's definitely worth the hassle. I didn't know the threads came standard; I bought mine from a guy who machined his own mount in the 60's and thought he might have threaded the barrel himself. Learn something new every day!

I prefer to wet-wash them in Photo-Flo, it's more likely to get everything off. Fill up a decent sized container with warm water and Photo-Flo solution (it's super concentrated, don't need much more than a few drops) and run the negs between the pads of your thumb and index finger. A lot of stuff really gets stuck on the film and won't come off with a simple blower or soft brush.
If you don't have one already, a graphics tablet is really invaluable for touching up negs in photoshop. It's a lot less tedious than using a mouse, I generally prefer to touch up manually then use the Digital Ice scanners come bundled with. I'm not as anal about keeping negs absolutely pristine as some other photogs, but mine are generally nice enough that it's quicker to do touch-ups by hand with a graphics tablet than let my computer chug through it with Digital Ice (I don't have the fastest computer in the world ). Plus, it doesn't sacrifice that little bit of detail in the clean areas. The Wacom Bamboo is like $50-75 on Ebay and is fine for these purposes.

I'm not sure if they came on there originally or not, but mine has a threaded barrel

I can't imagine life without my Intuous. Not only is it miles ahead of a mouse for spotting and burn/dodge, it's an overall better input device. I only use my mouse for the occasional video game now. The pen is faster, easier and not as taxing on the joints.

I agree about the Intuos, far better than any mouse...
Just a more intuitive input device.
I'm working on a set of photos for a customer and have gone back to scan some film from last year. I might not use these, but this is what has come out of that work

i checked and thought i saw silverfast available for the 5400. yea, the first scan was like 10 minutes outta the box. i didn't even know how to load the film tray and just did a basic scan to see if everything was functional, hardware wise.
here's some more with the negs blown, & with digital ICE & grain disolver enabled.
