What lens did you use? Those are crazy sharp!

All those were taken with the Canon nFD 50mm f/1.4.

mawz - this is my favorite image you have posted so far. I agree - this looks like a longer lens in the 125mm+ range.

Thanks, and that does mean it must be the 150/3.5 C, the only other long lens I own for the Mamiya is a 300/5.6 C which I almost never carry.

Speaking of Ikon shots --- MIKE, what's up? Have you quit 35mm all together (other than xpan)??

I have about 30ish rolls of 35mm left, and I have resolved not to buy anymore. I am rebuilding my Hasselblad system and there are so many inexpensive/compelling smaller format systems, it's tough to keep shooting 35mm... with the exception of black and white. I still love going to night events here and cranking out some TMZ or Delta 3200, but once it's gone, I think it'll be mostly just medium format for me, with the Mamiya 7 on my outdoorsy excursions and the 503 for urban stuff.

I have a trip to DC/NY in a month, so I am sure I'll bring the ZI with some film with me for that, but my M lenses are awesome on my NEX, and so I have been slowly weening myself onto that system. My neighbor has an X-Pro1, so hopefully he'll let me shoot with that a bit to see if it's worth the fuss. The OM-D looks pretty amazing too. I also have the setup I'd want if the M9 becomes more "affordable" after Leica releases their 2012 camera.

I have a bunch of unprocessed rolls, so I'll be posting that stuff at some point soon, but I would expect to see more Hassy work to substitute for the 35mm.

Hi, Corposant, thanks for the answer.

A quick question: if I get a dedicate film scanner, How will those perform compare to Lab you mentioned above? I assume I no longer need to send off to scan, right?

In my experience, unlike Dustin, I prefer my own scans. Unless the lab is using drum scanners or Hasselblad Flextight that is. I find that I tweak the colors much better and can turn on/off things like auto contrast, sharpening, grain reduction...etc. I even enjoy the scanning process, but I don't know many people who do, so I must be an exception.

Thanks Katie! It's due to the Zeiss lenses more than anything else. I find that slide film shows the true lens character unlike digital which can be tweaked indefinitely.

Very nice shots! What strange vehicles, are they really allowed to drive around with people in them, or were they painted after they broke?

Are you really getting rid of the XPan soon, or do you plan to buy more 135 film for it?

This website should give you some insight - I don't think they run anymore: http://www.salvationmountain.us/

The XPan was on loan from kidtexas, and ironically it's now at Hasselblad USA getting a new motor for the electronic shutter (which failed). So I don't have it anymore - and I doubt I'll be buying any more 135, period. I can rent one locally for when I have any panoramic hunger pangs.

Could you write some quick impressions of shooting with an XPan? I have already started buying lenses for one, but finding the body at a decent price is proving to take some time...

Sure.

It's very similar to shooting with something like a Hexar RF - the differences for me are the weight (it's much heavier than it looks) and the frustrating lack of the metering information in the VF (solved apparently with the XPan II).

The biggest issue I had was I found that for all the RFs I have used, it's actually one of the more difficult to focus - the patch isn't as well-defined as my ZI. However, if you're primarily using the 45mm lens, it won't matter much, as in pano-mode DOF is pretty big.

The pleasant surprises were how ingenious the film transport mechanism is (it winds all the film out after you load it, so if you accidentally open the back, it will only expose unused film), it's easy to load, you can easily switch from panoramic to 24x36, and the metering is excellent (I only needed to spot meter with E-6).

Regarding the lenses, I used two out of the three - the 30mm and the 45mm. The 45mm is an excellent lens - you can switch from "24mm" in pano to 45mm in 2:3, it's reasonably fast for medium format, and the IQ is great. The 30mm is incredible - I'd put the image quality of this lens right up with the Mamiya 43mm, the ZF/ZE 21mm, and the ZM 18mm. Fuji's style is quite a bit different from Leica/Zeiss, so it's probably a little closer to the Mamiya "classic" rendering. The drawbacks are - 1) price 2) the aux VF is huge 3) at an equivalent 15mm it's very easy to shoot a crooked horizon, and these are costly mistakes if you straighten in post, and 4) opportunities to shoot something this wide are pretty rare, unless you're shooting vistas.

All in all, it's a great system, and if you utilize the pano-switch, it can sort of be considered versatile. Unfortunately it's something you have to have in your hands and use a bit to understand how practical it is for you and how much you'd use it. The fact that the one I had broke (which has rarely, if ever, happens to me) left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, because I usually use mechanical cameras. If you have a more specific question, feel free to PM me.

Thanks, that's very helpful, and more or less matches my expectations. For now I am planning on just using the 45mm and 90mm, since the 30mm is so expensive, so hopefully the focusing is okay. I have owned both an M6 and M8, so I hope that I can focus accurately enough with the XPan. I am sort of thinking of getting the XPan II, since everyone mentions the missing info in the viewfinder, but it is about double, which makes no sense as an experiment, I guess. I could always switch later, if I get along with the system, and make sure I get a good price on the I. I am not planning on using the 24x36 mode at all, I find the negatives too small, and prefer digital for this purpose.

IHMO I think the 90mm is the least useful of all of the (3) lenses - I'd sell it and plow the proceeds into the camera - just my $0.02.

Unfortunately it turns out it has some veiling on the inside, and the seller has refused to back it up. I will try to clean it out, since it looks like something on the inside of the rear element, which I might be able to get at fairly easily. Anyway, these lenses really aren't worth much at the moment. I got the 45 for 250 Euro and the 90 for 350 Euro, so for that small price, I prefer to try it out before selling it. But yes, I really got interested because of the 45mm lens.
