p.3 #1 · G-EOS adapter latest status?

I get inaccurate metering whenever I use an adaptor without a focus-confirm eprom. I can't recall whether Mark's adaptors have the eprom, but if they don't, then you will probably need to use varying degrees of exposure compensation to get accurate metering at different aperture settings. This is normal.

Richard,
Thanks for your response. I have used alternative lenses quite a bit but I don't recall any lens that gives me overexposure on a consistent basis like this setup. My current Nikon to EOS adapter does have a AF confirming chip. Is that what you are referring to as "eprom"? Mark's adapter will also have the same or similar AF confirming chip, BTW. What does the chip have to do with the light metering of the camera? Could you explain please? Thank you!

Joshua,

What is the f-stop setting on your camera? With Leica lenses on my 1DIII, I turn the f-stop dial until it goes all the way to 1.0 (not f/2.0 or f/2.8 but f/1.0). That is the only way I can get an accurate exposure.

Gib,
Each time I am using an alternative lens, I always set the camera to the AV setting and let the camera choose the appropriate shutter speed, depending on the actual aperture of the lens that I control. I never encountered this issue before with any other lens. Again, it is no big deal but I was just curious whether other users have noticed the same thing using this particular lens.

I switch between M and AV. When on AV I usually do the same let the camera decide the shutter speed but there are times I may have to underexpose usually 2/3 of a stop.

One positive aspect with the delayed delivery of this adapter: when it was announced, the lens was selling for $1,800+. Now, the selling price of this lens is around $1,600.00. You practically get the adapter for free now .

That's the spirit!

Actually, I'm going to have to put the price of this thing up to cover the cost of making it: the idea initially was to make it available at the lowest possible cost as a service to a handful of like-minded obsessives. It was never priced to make a profit worth having.

Now I'm handling more than 120 orders and there isn't remotely enough margin to cover the time I'm spending on it. It's become a monstrous PITA: please stop buying them!

As soon as I get stock, they'll be sold only on eBay and they'll be closer to $250.

On the plus side, I'm not having to compensate for increasing overexposure as I stop down when using the adaptor on the 5D.

Rec'd mine yesterday (Monday) in Juneau, Alaska. Unfortuntaley, I've taken some planned and some unplanned financial hits since I ordered it so I'll have to wait to test it until I recoup some cash and can buy the 14-24. In the meantime, I'll try and borrow some G lenses from fellow Juneau photogs and give it a go. I might also rent a 14-24 for a bit just to check the combo out on my 5D and 1D2n. I'll report back with my results.

Cheers and thanks Mark!

Mark,

It's all your fault for telling us how good that 14-24 is. If you had just said that it sucked, no one would want your adapter. ;-)

Cheers,
James

Hey Mark, go up on the price so you get paid for the effort you are putting in. Could you tell me how the adapters were shipped?
Thanks
Dennis

"Could you tell me how the adapters were shipped?"

Good luck Dennis, I've tried posting here, sent PMs, sent emails, etc. all with no response. I ordered mine Dec. 24th so I should have been in that first batch sent out. I see people in CA and Alaska are getting theirs so Seattle shouldn't be that far off. A simple yes or no as to whether an adapter was sent out is all we're asking and if no then we could ask for a refund which would free up an adapter for someone else.

Jack,
I ordered mine in the second week of January. Recently, I sent an email to Mark inquiring about the availability. He replied back telling me that mine would be in the second batch and that I could expect that in approximately a month from now. Since you didn't get it in the first batch, I would say that you would be getting it in the first week of June or so.

Thanks for the info AGeoJO. But, I should be in the first batch based on info on his website and if not then a simply reply to my emails asking for any info would have been nice.

Actually, at the time I ordered the adapter I was shooting both Canon and Nikon. For various reasons I chose the Nikon dSLR. If I could get in touch with him and find out if my adapter was mailed I could say, "Hey Mark, I am now shooting with a Nikon body only so to free up an adapter go ahead and just issue me a refund." If it's already mailed out then that's fine too, I'll just post it to the B&S message board. Delays are understandable but not returning multiple requests for an update is not good. We're all busy, I'm busier than most, but if I start a business transaction I make sure it's taken care of until the end. He has time to post to the various message boards so rather than doing that how about writing back paying customers? If I'm being unreasonable then sobeit.

As per his website...

"April 26th: Orders placed before December 26th now shipped."
"April 28th: Order backlog cleared to January 4th."
"April 21st: NOW SHIPPING! Clearing order backlog . . ."

Several emails have been sent to all customers, and in the vast majority of cases I've sent additional replies to those requesting them.

In the end of year accounting a few weeks ago, we discovered a previously overlooked batch of 8 very early orders placed over Christmas. Unfortunately, I've been able to confirm from my records in the last few days that these did not make it into the first batch. I will be sending emails to that group today.

Demand for this adaptor has far outstripped expectations: in December, I anticipated making a batch of 20 for people I knew, priced just to cover the costs. The current order tally stands at more than 125.

Gradually – and somewhat reluctantly – I've had to scale up supply, manufacture, admin and costs to meet the demand, but in the early days, I had no 'commercial-grade' system for tracking orders or maintaining the high standards of customer relations we tend to expect these days (well, US customers, anyway: in the UK, poor service is a much-cherished national trait). However, we are now on the case: we're set to be delivering these ex-stock soon, and we have admin in place to handle the volume. Dennis and Jack – yours were in the lost 8, I'm afraid, along with Rob Galbriath's.

So apologies again: as before, I will refund promptly anyone who's been troubled by the delay – is that what you want, Jack? If so, just PM or mail me.

Hi Mark,
This is a bit disappointing. This has made me shoot some projects without my wide angle lenses, seeing I sold my Canon 17-40 and Sigma 12-24. Shooting without these has made me realize how much these lenses were just acceptable and not up to the quality I expect. I have gone back to using my Zeiss 28 and Stitching with my Zork and Pentax 35mm. The Zork gives me about 17mm coverage and combined with the MK3 is amazingly detailed and sharp with its 300meg files. I still can't wait to get your adapter after seeing the samples with this lens.
Dennis

I know: I feel really bad about letting down my favourite half-dozen early adopter comrades but getting hold of those Pro-spec base adaptors in quantity has been a headache beyond my worst imagining.

In a few months, though, all this will be forgotten: I'll have them in stock, half a dozen other suppliers will have copied it, and we'll all be loving our 14-24's . . .
