New I had one somewhere. I'm always behind the camera and never the subject of the camera. My wife did decide to take one awhile back. I had to do a lot of digging > Knew I had this somewhere but it was burried in one of the external hard drives.

Anthony,
Your wife did a very nice job taking your photo! On a side note - I also carry my Gitzo with a Wimberly II Gimbal head and a big lens (well the Nikon 200-400 f4 - it's a pretty big lense but not a monster) over my shoulder. I am anal about tightening down all the knobs before I put it on my shoulder as you have yours in your photo but I sometimes think about the disaster if anything holding it together failed! Oh well, I bought all this to use and not to preserve so I take the risk but it still makes me a little nervous!

I have a similar outfit and know where your comming from as far as what if when carrying it over my shoulder. I got into the habit of holding the lens strap pinched in with the tripod leg. Of course if anything let go you would need to see a chiropractor when the camera-lens-gimbel got you in the back.

AM I the only one who's been taught not to point my lens towards the sky when I carry it around?
I've been taught to turn my lens towards the ground..... No one else?
When I carry a smaller lens I carry like that, but lens pointing down. When I carry the monster & have the legs spread, & the bottom of the plate rests on my shoulder. That way I have one leg in front, one to the back & I hold on to the third with my hand & arm. Also, I tend to have the neck strap around my neck for support. But somehow I don't think the neck strap will hold the Sigmonster & camera......

Lil, Ron and I are guilty of pointing our lens toward the sky, we fold in our tripod legs and sling the entire rig over our shoulder kinda like Anthony has his, but the legs folded up. We both have padding around the top portion of the leg sets to rest on our shoulders. I guess we could start pointing the lens to the ground. But, I would be curious to know the reasons why Maybe to keep it cleaner, or to keep the sun from shooting into the lens for split second.

I normally do the same thing Chad > I fold up the legs and throw it over my shoulder. In the case of this picture I was only moving 10 feet or so so I just picked it up and went.

I cannot remember the name of it > But it has O rings on the outer edge and fits tight inside covering the Front Element of the 500 > it has a handle on it so you can just reach inside the Lens Hood and pull it back out..............

Lil you are right as I do believe (even after reading the link) that I read that somewhere from either Nikon or Canon on another forum a very long time ago. Could even have been in the box of a new lens. Either way now that the only glass I can carry is on my B/H the lens points down. If I have to take my 500 or 800 and the trail is a smooth one I conveted a pull golf cart for both the lens (in the hard case) and the tripod and a monopod. If the trail is rough I don't go

I am the (dumba$$) author of that 'other' thread. Please, please, please don't point your lens up unless you know exactly which way it's pointing. My "patient" is still not out of the Canon hospital.

Chad
Chad, I've been told it has to do with that the lens will do to the sensor etc due to the sun.
L.A. with all it's sun would make me more cautious needless to say

Anthony,
main thing is that your camera's OK. I'm thinking of getting one of those Hoodman things....

Hi Lou,
I'm still waiting for my Beach-Rolly to arrive. I have the wheels since two weeks, but the rest I'm waiting for.
I've just done a search for a lens cover I feel will work for me. I have a problem when I take the camera out when I ride. The lens cap just won't stay on & I don't like riding around without one. So I remembered a "different" kind of lens hood cover as I was riding the other day. The Hood Hat by Optech. You can see it here. I'm going to see if it will work for both my cheap lens for when I go riding as well as for my big lens. Should be able to thread over the lens hood..... Would be a potential way to go.

Give yourself a break. We all make mistakes.... I hope the patient fully recovers & that you'll be out shooting soon again.
