A pancake lens would not be a zoom. So, only focusing, then. Ever tried manual focus with the 50f1.8 II? The focusing ring is just a joke, but the lens still sells like hot cakes.
Unfortunately they don't speak English in Canon Japan (as a native language), so they would miss the pun (which I missed, too, when I wrote this, so it was certainly not intended).
I find this thread very amusing. How on earth can any DSLR be though of as a pocket camera? With NO lens on my 30D I would not consider it a pocket camera, let alone with this odd looking thing stuck on the front of it.
As a few have mentioned, the 50/1.8 is very tiny and very capable combination, on both FF and EF-S bodies.
Also, it is kind of strange to see people exholting the virtues of a stripped down bare bones lens over the usual, 'L' glass reigns in these forums...

although I'd like a couple of pancakes... I'd be happy with a sharp wide open center and sharp stopped down corners on a 28 1.8..... I don't think I'd need much smaller than that....
Just drill a tiny hole in the center of your body cap and viola: pinhole pancake lens. Attach some clear tape over the hole to discourage dust. Cheap too.

Something like the XT series, or one of the smaller Olympi; something that goes into an overcoat pocket and stays there until needed. NOT a trouser pocket Actually, the larger point-and-shoots are not very different in size from the smallest DSLR bodies. It's that large hunk of glass jutting out from the body that spoils it, and that's where a pancake would be handy.

Because it fits in a pocket.
I shoot mainly Canon but I have a Pentax *ist DS and 2 pancake lenses. It assure you it fits in my jacket pocket. I tried to use a Canon 350D for the same job first but without pancakes it doesn't work, despite the fact that the body is roughly the same size.
I would love Canon to release some pancakes (EF-S, EF I don't care!) because then I could use a small Canon and not have to maintain 2 systems. Having said that, I am extremely happy with the Pentax setup and I'm glad Olympus have figured out that a small body without small lenses is kind of pointless.

A stripped down and bare bones pancake lens which cowers in the presence of the mighty L glass and the mighty Canon 50 f1.8! Seriously, exholting aside, the Oly pancake is actually very good, and I prefer it to the Canon 50 f1.8 because
- it's much smaller
- it focusses closer
- has nicer bokeh
- is solidly made
- has a nice manual focus movment
- is 40mm, not 50
My 5D with a lens similar to that Brainiac shows would fit in my pocket.
Another thing is that we may see smaller sized full frame sensor bodies released in the next few years. Imagine an 450D sized FF camera. It will be tough to get there, but after all some film SLRs of that size have been seen around (I know a digital camera needs to fit boards, batteries, memory cards, LCDs etc, but that can get smaller --just look at the smallest Ixus cameras).

Hehe Where are they going to put the 4" LCD? Don't take away the buttons!
