p.9 #1 · New AF fix for 1D mkIII

Sent mine in for submirror on Wed. Got the notification that it would be here via FedEx tomorrow. Of course, I get to send it back in later with this new fix...but as long as they can turn it around that fast, I'll be happy enough (provided it is a fix).

I do like the thought of an extra yr of warranty though.... I purchased mine in July..

Well, it's a bit after 11:00 PM so I must assume that my dear friends at Canon have decided to blow off the 6:30 PM call that THEY scheduled to have me talk with a "senior tech" to discuss with the OOF issues related to using the * button. It's frustrating because we were supposed to go out but didn't in the hopes of talking with someone who might actually have a clue. It's almost like they are doing everything in their power to piss me off.

(in an understanding, compassionate sort of way). i empathize with your situation, as i've felt the EXACT same thing with my 1d3. it really makes you want to... somehow... sue the pants off of these guys. even if it gets you nothing, just for pure satisfaction.

I dont think that it would be a great idea to Jumb to the next version of 1D if Canon has not fixed the issues from the previous one. That could be a very big mistake for 2 major reasons

1. Canon is not capable to fix AiServo problems in version III (this model has everything that a serious programmer and developer and also engineer to work to this camera and make it much better - dual DigicIII+great hardware assembly). For us that we are working in many levels of photography this idea is not good to go to next episode of problems called MarkIV
2. We give the idea to Canon just to manipulate us like dumb people that we will agree with everything this company produces even if they have strange problems.

I think that we should prepared for a straight answer from Canon about the MarkIII AiServo issues and of course for the new fix (if any).

Never has there been a greater argument against the propensity for us in the west to sue.
If the engineers had been cleared to say:
"oops, we got it wrong.
Hang in there and we will work 24 / 7 till we get it sorted." most would have understood. Offers of buying the cameras back, or future credits on future products woud have had nearly everyone onside.

This is so funny it makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

You have been pissed off for a long time and it shows in your heated conversations with Canon as you report them in your own words in this and other threads. Nobody goes out of their way to help someone who is angry and heated with them. There are two sides.

Those expat communities do business within well regulated governmental and legal frameworks and systems that other nations have developed. There are also many other cultural differences such as much larger extended families and a different variety of self-contained organized crime that come into play. Your basic thesis is not applicable for these and other reasons.

It's been a few days now. When Rob says, usually news like this is followed closely be a press release, does that mean within a year or two? I may have to stop reading forums until I'm ready to buy my new camera and start my research over at that point. All these rumors are beginning to make me wonder.

They'll probably release on Friday, give us time to simmer down over the weekend, maybe decrease the number of disgruntled phone calls that will inevitably follow.

I have never been more angry at an interview as with the one with Chuck W at Cnet. How he swept the past issues under the rug and nothing about the on going issues. I know he is the face guy but he is still talking about CF as the solution. Sad.

I agree Wicked... I just read it too... Sounds to me like he/they are happy with the results from the first fix

They're saying it performs to specifications so they have the option of improving it, rather than being forced to. Of course, that statement is theoretically problematic, depending on what they are telling the VIP customers about further fixes as Rob mentioned. Are they saying something in accord: It works well, but we may be able to make it work better. Or are they saying, yeah, it still sucks, but we'll get it to how it was promised.

Hmmm, maybe RobG was misinformed?

Here's the latest by Chuck Westfall:

http://www.news.com/8301-13580_3-9865553-39.html?tag=nefd.top

"Do you think you've resolved the 1D Mark III autofocus issue?

[Westfall:] The hardware fix and firmware update has effectively brought the camera within the design specifications. Under the vast majority of study conditions, the camera is functioning exactly the way we expected it to.

So is it better at autofocus than the 1D Mark II N (the camera's predecessor)?

Westfall: Yes. The system has a lot more to it. There are improvements to the sensor, with 19 cross-type throughout the frame compared to 7 in the center. This is an area Rob Galbraith did not address. And there are a lot more customization settings to be able to tweak autofocus accuracy to the way you shoot--focus priority versus release priority for example.

That said, we are continuing to investigate. We're not disputing anything Rob wrote--he's made a fair and objective test. We have no argument except that the 1D Mark III is a lot closer (to the 1D Mark II N's autofocus performance) than his severe test and that he doesn't test the full range of conditions. There's more to it. "
