Did you guys see where Sports Illustrated laid off their entire staff? Wonder what that was all about? Obviously it's a financial thing but it makes you wonder what their plan is from this point.
Sports Illustrated" is a "property" owned by some corporation/venture fund (whatever), they 'licensed" some other entity to actually produce, publish, and sell the magazine. The "owners of the "property", don't make their money from the magazine, their profits come from the licensing payments/royalties.
The licensee defaulted on (I read somewhere) a multi-million dollar license/royalty payment. Missing that payment terminated their license to produce, publish, and sell Sports Illustrated. Once they lost the license their staff became redudant, so the staff was laid off/terminated.
Now the "property" owners either have to find a new entity to purchase the license, publish the magazine themselves, or just let Sport Illustrated die. I'm pretty sure that the "owners" are trying to accomplish the first (or second) option. Then again, depending on their tax situation option three might provide a very healthy tax write off.
And now for the rest of the story. SI (the publisher) went from weekly to monthly. Kind of hard to take a monthly sports magazine seriously.
Then, they decided the people buying the magazine were a little to Frat like, so they hired a woke lady to revamp the swimsuit editions, their biggest cash cow. The new lady decided they needed plus size models and septuagenarians in bathing suits to attract the customers they wanted.
Bottom line, Bud Lite II.
Peter King was one of their better writers with his articles. When he left, things began to go south for them. I use to read King every week but I forgot why he left, been a long time.
Also, their sports photography became quite bland, unlike when Walter Iooss was more active.
Thanks guys! I had no idea. That woke thing sure seems to be the shortest way to the porcelain bowl doesn’t it? Remember when you had no idea where a company stood politically, you did business with them because they did a good job, made a good product. Now it’s all virtue signaling, mediocre work product, but they love to send you five surveys so you can tell them that they are mediocre!🤣

When the magazine keeps playing the race card and having this type of swimsuit cover, what did they expect? I will say this again, this country has gone fxxking nuts.
Have a glass of wine and enjoy your weekend, gentlemen.

Not too "Yumi"......................
Nothing wrong of being fat other than health issues, I am not a skinny myself.. But as a swimsuit cover for Sports Illustrated? My good Lord. These are the same people who say men can get pregnant.
Amidst the rush of life I discovered that my R5 and R5C firmware was way out of date, so I updated them both tonite. I've kind of gotten gun shy on updates, usually like to wait a bit to see what kind of problems they are causing the early adopters.
Yup, and the more plug in's and peripherals you have, the greater the chance the update doesn't play well with something. My OWC Thunderbay RAID units have been a problem over the years because Apple doesn't like to give any 3rd party manufacturers enough early information to be prepared for some updates, and Final Cut third party plug ins are always a problem.

Absolutely, and I didn't mean to be unkind but come on, and from a marketing standpoint, that ain't gonna sell magazines.........
The writing has been on the wall for a few years or more Jim!
I think people are now seeing that the writing was not done with "invisible ink!"
I just saw on my newsfeed that National Geographic (recently acquired by Disney) is letting go of their staff writers and editors. Guess they will start using freelancers (or AI) in their place.
My local weekly newspaper is printing their last physical edition in 2 weeks, after that it will be web based only. I probably won't renew when my subscription ends. I like sitting at the park and reading the newspaper. I'm not going to buy a tablet and pay for a data plan, just to read a local weekly newspaper. Besides I like reading a physical paper (or book).

Ken, I read only books anymore! I gave up very long ago on newpapers. Their bias, on all newspapers, media, tv, is slanted. Some way more than others.
My local media of any type is just TERRIBLE! Truth is not in their agenda!
So I read books that interest me and let the media dictate where our Country is going. Maybe common sense will prevail in the next few months.
I hope they prove us correct and common sense prevails! But I am only a citizen and a voter.

I live in an unincorporated area near a very small, incorporated city. The local weekly paper covers the local politics (city council meeting & elections). I don't pay attention to that as it doesn't affect me. I read it for the local news, not the local politics.
The daily paper I read, does cover national & county politics. I know their bias. At one point they actually had 1 conservative columnist that they published a weekly column from. After a couple years they replaced him with another liberal columnist. As with the weekly paper, I basically ignore the national politics, and pay little attention to the county politics. I do try and follow what the County Board of Supervisors is up to, because that does affect me, living in an unincorporated area. Basically, I read it for the news, not the opinions.
Living close to San Francisco, I know the political leanings of the majority of the surrounding population, and all of the local press. I "mine" the local press, like a miner extracting valuable minerals from dirt & rocks.
Agree but my town is so small we only have the Country "rag" or the Washington Post. It is a one sided newspaper it is very inaccurate in its reporting. The Post is worthless IMHO!
Thanks Ken!

Dan, I live in a cave!. I haven't read newspaper/magazine for a long time. We cancelled the cable a year ago, we hadn't watched TV for a couple years anyway, too much trashy contents, sports have been politicized, news are biased (from both sides). I get my news from online sources, which aren't biased free either. There is no real journalism anymore.
