Jim,
Send the jet! I'll shoot with ya!!!! Don't know what your weather is but we have -10F with winds NW@30, Gust to 50........... I'd enjoy a break with some balmy weather. Blizzard warning set to expire tomorrow am; think we are through the worst of it now. They keep talking about blowing snow but after the last 24 hrs I think all the snow that was going to blow has blown . Now it's just a white concrete I'll have to chip off the drive.
Stay safe and warm everyone,
Dan
Hi Dan,
Thanks Buddy! "The jet is down for maintenance"........Sheila and I were joking about the weather we endured in Illinois, and we never gave it a thought. We have 15 degrees at the moment with 10-20 . I'm starting to strategize about my layers for today's shoot. I'm guessing attendance will be strong, it's for homeless and underserved folks and this weather magnifies their need. I'll be there, weebeesee!
Good Morning Douglas! Thanks for your kind thoughts re: the loss of Charlie. He was a rescue pup, abandoned by some ditz 20 something who got evicted from her apartment and left a puppy (barely weaned) to die. JR found him, took him to a vet and $1,000 later he was on the mend. He became JR's right hand companion, when he practiced law in East Texas JR brought him to the courthouse regularly, if he wasn't with JR the judges would ask where he was.
Intrepid a shooter as you are, I think you made the right decision about shooting in this cold snap! Save your trigger finger for another, warmer, day!

Thanks Guys. On a happier note, JIII and I decided to celebrate The Season with a trip to In'n'Out for lunch! And yes, that's snow you see out the windows in the background, "Global Warming" Ya know................
Mmm In'n'Out would love that, but I think the doc thinks otherwise.
Hope you and Thea are doing wonderfully. Bit of a sad note, our Charlie had to be put to sleep a couple of weeks ago. He was 17 and, much as we all disliked the thought, it was cruel to let him go on in the condition he was in. Difficult thing deciding when to end a life, even a pet's, doesn't feel like something one should do, even if it's the best thing.
My children never lasted past 11 Jim! And they had to leave for the "Rainbow Bridge" the same way. Pieces of my heart are gone! I still grieve. Especially this time of year!

Very interesting background on the pup, Jim. How nice it was that the court let him in! I have a lot of respect for the folks who rescue animals, especially from the dreadful puppy mills.
J-A, we only see hooded mergansers here in the winter. I read they are not migratory birds but not sure where they go in other seasons. They are very skittish. The best opportunity to photograph them is when the lakes/ponds are almost completely frozen, they congregate in a small body of open water. When males are courting females, the feather on their heads stand up and look like a crown.
Here are some shots from this year (mostly from Jan.) They are cute little ducks.
Anyone using wide angles much ?
I love the effect from them but the 10-22 is so soft and not that sharp. Canon recommends the 11-24 F4L but it's $2999.00 new, found a used one for $2300.
You are right, they can be very cool! The widest that I have now is the RF/15-35 which is extremely sharp and fast...............and pricey. Admittedly, I don't use it very often but it's there when I need it. Until Canon rolls out the RF tilt shift lenses I'll use my EF's, and I have the 17mm T/S which is outstanding, but again, used a dozen times a year.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the update on Charlie. I did wonder, since the last thing I read about him kinda indicated that the great kennel in the sky might be getting a new addition soon. Still, given his difficult start in life I’m sure he had a good one with JR and the Wilson clan. 17 is a considerable age for a pup.
Thea and I are currently looking after a pair of Yorkshire Terriers - Mabel and Libby. No photo yet since they badly need grooming. Their owner has been in and out of hospital most of the year so it’s all been a bit of a rinse and repeat cycle! The owner lives on his own since the death, last year, of his wife – who was Thea’s best friend. We hope to have him over for Lunch tomorrow. The girls will go nuts when they see him, so hopefully that will lift the mood a little.

Wow, that’s a lot of Lunch for a young chap! Did he let Pops have some fries? Nice to seen the veg in there - in the corner looking kinda scared!

Hi Nick it's reasonable considering were I came from.
Not 100% but I resumed work July 1st, I don't drive trucks any more full time but only
occasionally.
I'm now in charge of the terrain depot and warehouse, still a busy job but more manageable.
The charge in my daily battery is not as good as it was but I'm fortunate that the boss wanted to keep me onboard.
J.A.
Thanks for the update Jan-Arie. Sorry your battery is not yet up to full charge. These EVs aren't all they are cracked up to be!
I think your boss is fortunate to have you.
I got a very nice present late last night. It came in the form of a phone call telling me that my oil and gas clients received their funding. This is going to be fun , a ton of work , but fun!

Bill,
I admit I have a 14mm, 17mm TSE, and 18-300. I use my Canon 24-70 f2.8 II the most. It is the sharpest zoom I have ever used. I have NOT used the 10-22 and probably will not at $2300 bucks.
That is over 75%% of my retirement monthly income and , althought I worked for the govt for 46 years in total...they are not giving "free money" to seniors, retirees or those worked all their life for some confortable retirement!
Merry Christmas...your "CC" were a HIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Dan, next round will be 3x better, wait and see you will
.
I have the 24-70 2.8L but curious if the Mark II are that much better.
.
I found a 17-40 F4L but not sure if that's wide enough for what I want...
