Just did the firmware update on the R5, can't wait to try out the AF additions.
Jim, definitely see improvement in BIF and static shots lock on quicker yesterday when tested on a Great Egret far out.
On a Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter in vehicle focus Sunday with my R5 and 800 f11 it locked on. Pretty cool how it worked.
Guy on Canon thread said it worked well on planes at Chino airshow. Look forward to using my R5 at airshows this spring.

Beautiful image Buddy! I did the update and found the same thing that you did. Actually kind of a bad marketing move by Canon to release that firmware update as the R3 is being shipped...... Seems to me that, except for the Eye AF, this update moves the R5 very close to the R3's overall performance, only with 50MP. I tested the updated R5, then let the results simmer in my mind for a couple of days, along with the comment Douglas made about 24mp and our ability to crop a 50MP image. This morning I sent an email to my supplier in Austin telling him to cancel my R3 order. Spending six grand to split hairs suddenly became clearly absurd to me, especially knowing that I'll order two R1's the second they are announced. Now I'm glad that Canon drug their feet a little on shipping mine, it gave me time to come to my senses.
I saw that, pretty sure mine would have been in sometime in the next few weeks. My opinion of the camera hasn't changed, but neither has my skepticism over regressing to 24mp. The update was a big factor and Douglas' thought sealed the deal. I have one coming in at Competitive as well but it's a hard pass for me at this point, no regrets.
Yep, that was a crazy crop on that Cormorant turning out nice. I could not see using 24mp on a camera again after being able to get good crops from 45 mp with my R5.

Nice one, Jim! The gentleman standing next to me yesterday at Cononwingo Dam shooting bald eagles had a new R3 with the 600mm F4 L II on. In one eagle fishing dive he said the buffer started to slow down after 160 shots, he was trying the 30 FPS mode, so that was just 5 seconds of shooting. He is a very experienced birder and well known in the local birding community.
Here are some of the shots of the three fishing episodes I was able to photograph yesterday, not the best angle from where I stood when they grabbed the fish.
You all have a great weekend.

Douglas,
I view your images and review mine that I took 10 years or more ago. The difference is just night and day! So sharp, detailed and exposed so properly.
Again so fine Douglas...and this goes out to all the members who post here also.

Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it.
Hopefully, both my photography skills and my post production skills have gotten better over the years.
A friend of mine came up from Austin to spot at DFW on Monday afternoon. LOTS of American Airlines birds, obviously, but I didn't notice this B-737 was different than so many of the other B-737's with American. This one has the AA Eagle logo on the winglets, too. I kinda like it, myself.
You can certainly tell the late afternoon sun setting, with the huge wing shadow on the fuselage.
Jay, your images and the images of others have progressed immensly. Not that any were good, just that your skills and the newer camera bodies have improved making your posts much more enjoyable to these olde tired eyes!
Great work!
