Pilot did a great job! He placed that plane over the top of those swimmers and short of another group.

I just saw this in "real time" on The Weather Channel. This pilot did one helluva job! Nose up or flip! There was a Ski-Doo right behind the plane as it hit the water. Glad everyone is safe.

Here is another shot I got while waiting for the line guys to turn the aircraft around that I was there to photograph. The beauty of all of this, only one runway is in operation right now in Austin.

I had a dusk shoot last evening, stills and drone work, and decided that it was time to go ahead and use the R5 instead of my trusty 5DSR's. I popped the EF/RF converter on with a 24 TSE II lens and the combination performed beautifully. The project is just south of Alliance Airport in a no fly zone so I had to jump through a few hoops for that part of the mission. This is the first of five buildings in the complex containing millions of sq. ft., and the client wants the full treatment on all of them so I'm going to be spending a lot of time in AFW airspace at dawn and dusk.

BTW, this project is not complete and didn't have any grass. The client just got the imagery and they are beside themselves because they needed these images for a very critical press release this week and they didn't think there was any way we could create this kind of imagery at this point.

Funny how things work out, Chandler and I have been brainstorming an epic shot of the 10,000' parallel runways at AFW, but we just haven't found the perfect vantage point, until last night. We are going to go over and take a whack at it in the very near future.

The pilot of the Avenger ditching yesterday in Cocoa Beach. He looks to be solid as a rock climbing out of that crash, didn´t even lose the sunglasses on the crash. "Sorry for ruining your beach day, folks"

Now here is a real pilot after ditching his TBM he is keeping his headset out of the saltwater (look at his right hand). Back in the day, you could spot a REAL airline pilot because on a turn would retreat to the cabin and pick up a used newspaper to read on the next leg.

Just got confirmation that my 100 macro RF is ordered, nice but I doubt I’ll get it before August. I’d love to have it for a product shoot tomorrow.

You should hang around a while in Austin, there's Antonov 124s coming in and out at the moment, bringing parts for the giant Tesla plant they're building. I think Thursdays are a good time to see them. I should probably go up and try to catch one myself...

I have been testing Jim's 1Dx III and tonight it got a brutal test. Aside from the 47 degree (F) windchill, I finally had a game begin late with heavy cloud cover. I took a Lightroom screen shot of a photo with ISO 32,000. I couldn't believe it. The screen shot shows the camera settings in top left corner and the noise reduction on the right side...none. This photo is not one I used as a keeper based on composition alone, but I couldn't believe it was clean enough to use for the paper...and I worry about ISO 12,800.

Way to go Eddie Ray! Glad you are having fun with the III! When you pick that camera up you can feel the capabilities, it's an amazing tool.

A few years back Boydo called me with the exciting news that his tanker was going to drag the Thunderbirds to Puerto Rico. He was so fired up that he was going to get to shoot them air to air over the Caribbean ...............with his 4MP Canon body.......................! I asked where he was going to be for the next few days, packed up whatever the latest and greatest was at the time (can't remember, 1D MK ?) and fired it off overnight to him. When I introduced him to the R5 a few months ago it was more than he could resist so he's shooting the R6 now. I have to admit Jeremy did more with that 4MP Canon than anyone else I know, but now he's really having fun!

For an image maker, there's really nothing quite like having some cool new piece of equipment in your hands, it just energizes you and the work you do with it! I can hardly wait for the R1, and the R3 in the interim!

There are always those out there who pop off with the "really?! Just how many MP do you really need?!" Much of that can be translated into, "Really, I wish I could afford gear like that.........", but that seems to be too hard to verbalize so the conversation takes on the social media slant and acquires barbs. The truth of the matter is, shooters like Ray and Jeremy can get beautiful imagery with a 4MP camera, but a more sophisticated piece of equipment allows them to expand their game and take full advantage of their innate talent and the skills that they have honed over the years. The old argument that the camera doesn't make the photographer is just one perspective, and it's a bit skewed, a great image maker is always looking for the next tool that will expand his or her capability.

There was a guy on the R1 Facebook thread the other day who unequivocally stated, "No one needs 100 MP.........No One!" I always feel like I'd like to have a minute with someone who has acquired that ultimate depth of knowledge, kind of like the people who blurt out with great certainty that there is no God............it must be quite something to have reached that plateau of wisdom................................

And there are people who say you don't need high ISO and other specs. Well, it depends on the customer. If the customer is you, yourself or "I", maybe not. I have a customer who needs photos by a deadline. I don't have time to use different software processing programs to process the photos to make them presentable. We have a baseball umpire shortage in Central Texas. There are 28 teams and 27 umpires. Teams are rescheduling games to accommodate the shortage, usually requiring a later start time. Last night I had less than an hour to get 6-7 photos to the editor. That includes taking the photos, uploading to the computer for processing (including captions, identifying players, keywords, etc.), then I have to upload them to the web for email. Last night I got the photos in before the deadline (thanks 1D for eliminating noise editing!) but the sports writer couldn't make the deadline because the game lasted past the writers deadline. They still need my photos because they post the photo with a caption telling the reader the full article will run online and in next days paper. They use the photo to capture the attention of the reader.

Better equipment shortens processing time which allows me more time on the field to get a better image. I am using a new Mac with the M1 that is faster plus a program that allows me to use shorthand for captions and player identifications. I have shortened the processing time from 45 minutes to less than 25. I want to provide my customer with a shot the editor will use to draw attention to the article. For me, it isn't about the $$$, since I am retired and doing this for fun, and it is fun, my desire is to be the best image provider for my customer. So far, they keep sending me to games, that makes me happy.

Oh, and aside from the ISO being great, the AF is amazingly fast!
