p.48 #1 · Mustang Air to Air: The Sequel

Building Memories,

Annie and I went turkey hunting this past weekend in WI. The warm spring had pretty much meant all the birds had mated already and we had little chance of calling in a Tom. But what the heck, it was the weekend that worked in our schedule so off we went, less our camp chairs for the turkey blind and several other items that where stored away yet this year.

Arriving Friday evening at my friends farm we set up the blind and got things ready. Of course you are "suppose" to hunt turkey early in the morning, but have you tried to wake a 14 yr old at 5am? Ya, didn't work for me either, took till 6:15am to get to "eyes open" and after 6:30 before we were out the door. Set up the 3 decoys and got in the blind shortly before 7am. We were finally "hunting"!

Remember the missing camp chairs? Well we couldn't see out of the blind so every few minutes we had to get up on our knees and check the 3 decoys. Remember the 14 yr old, ya, the "snacks" were history by 8:30 am, and I went "hungry". And still every 10 minutes we were checking our 3 decoys. And all the while Annie is just chatting about everything, the "silly" boys in class, her friends, dance, you name it. Non-stop entertainment. And every 10 minutes we are calling and checking the 3 decoys. Nothing, dead silence, not one gobble back, just a nice quiet morning. So we just continue to sit/lay in the blind and talk.

About 9:15 we again pause conversation about dance, rise up off the floor and check our 4 decoys............................... Yep, had to do a double check on that one, and yes in all this talk, movement, etc an old Tom had joined us. As I pull open the Velcro window to "sneak" out the shotgun she who has learned to whisper in a saw mill says "DAD, HE'S GOING TO HEAR THAT!". Probably, but since who knows how long he had been out there listening to our chatter he didn't care. And so we got a turkey, and more importantly we made a weekend of memories. Topped it all off with some bow shooting and a nice dinner out.

Sure was fun to take some time to "smell the roses"
Dan

was out birding a couple weeks ago when i seen a Chinook fly into town, so i abandoned the birding and headed to the airport hoping to catch the Chinook when it flew out, turned out to also have a Snowbird parked there

as i was watching another Chinook came in with at the same time a Sea King, finally, hanging out at the airport worked out to catch some military arrivals instead of always the departure

JR sent this to me sometime last night. I guess I never really knew what a Foley Artist did. Very interesting, outside of the creativity, the other thing that struck me is that you obviously don't need to fix up for that line of work

Thanks Jim, only problem is the airport isn't photo friendly, i have to deal with shooting either through a chain link fence or in the case of that photo standing on my car door sill and trying to shoot over it but the barb wire on top of the fence got in the way
would like to take some wire cutters there and cut my own lens access holes

Thanks you Steve, sure is and the way things were working out so good that day, the topper would of been a couple CF-18's coming in, the Sea King was just perfect, i didn't even realise he was coming, i was watching the approaching Chinook, but he landed a ways away from me on the runway, then i heard the wop wop of the sea king and realised he was coming in and landing on the tarmac right beside where i was parked

Well, the "2nd Annual Gathering of TBMs" is supposed to be this Saturday. BUT, the forecast is for thunderstorms (90%). The organizers are silent, some of the owners are debating whether to chance it, and those of who want to attend haven't a clue. I would love to see a gaggle of TBMs, but would hate to drive 400+ miles to see a thunderstorm.

Why is it that air shows (and displays like this one) seem to be storm magnets? I know nobody has an answer -- I just had to vent.

Another from the back of the Caribou: FM-2 Wildcat owned and flown by Greg Shelton and the FG-1D Corsair from Cavanaugh with Stuart Milson at the controls.

Yeah, where's the Mustang when you need it? Of course, we were supposed to be shooting a pair of Wildcats and the Corsair was just a last-minute substitution.

I was in Texarkana Arkansas today, photographing a Citation II for a broker, and this nice Gulfstream came in for a landing while I was out on the ramp.

It had gone on a thirty minute "hop" over to Dallas, to drop the owner off at Addison Airport for a meeting.

Rough life.

OK having won this week's club print competition with my B&W Jaguar, I thought I'd have a go at some others from the same shoot. Which do members prefer (if at all)?

Agreed, I too like the B&W but do not like the amount of negative space under the Jaguar.
