Good Morning/Evening Nick,

Yes, I finished up my backlog of aerials a little while ago. A couple of them I flew when the light was the best we'd been given, but not up to my standards, so I re-flew those as well. Today was all drone work, but the site is in a restricted area just off of Addison Airport's runway so I had a number of hoops to jump through. The process is pretty cumbersome, if I didn't have Mike Brewington and Deb Hale in the brain trust I'm not sure what I would do.

Hello Jim.

Many thanks for the comprehensive overview of your drone flying obstacle course. Do you think “they” could make it more complicated / difficult / add extra bits? On second thoughts, the answer might be “sure, how bad do you want it to be?” Still, your standing and savvy should help the competition understand just how high the bar is set. Hopefully the clients appreciate the time and effort you’ve invested.

Looking forward to seeing some results, as and when.

So here we have the mighty Provost. I know of no other production airframe that has piston / prop and jet powered versions. Oh, and in the transition from piston to jet the gear became retractable, the small wheel moved from the back to the front, the cockpit got a one piece canopy and ejector seats, and …… Epic!

p.427 #5 · Mustang Air to Air: The Sequel

Good Morning Nick,

"They" are in the process of trying to make it more difficult, and a lot more expensive. The FAA put out an NPRM last year (a rule proposal) requesting comments on draconian restrictions over all drone ops. Really, if their proposal were to be implemented most, if not all drones as we know them now, would become paperweights. Anyone wanting to operate a drone, post this rule making, would need to acquire a drone that has the ability to be connected to the internet at all times and it would need very sophisticated in/out communications capabilities. Guessing at price for a drone like that at this point would be futile, but it's easy to imagine them beginning in the 20-30K range, with the octo versions doubling/tripling that. One thing the rules would do is immediately clean out the current drone operators in the US and create a much, much smaller group of UAS pilots, which is probably the FAA's goal anyway because this drone thing exploded in their face beyond anything anyone could have imagined. Such an implementation would result in clearing the competitive deck, an increase in helicopter use, substantially higher fees for UAS services and maybe somewhat easier access to the airspace, but I have never witnessed the government making anything easier when it gets involved.

I will say that the FAA has really done a very good job of adapting to something that they couldn't possibly have seen coming. Cumbersome as the airspace access might be in certain situations, they have moved faster than anyone ever would have believed, LAANC, AirMap, granting waivers through DroneZone, are all a result of the FAA diving into the UAS industry in response to a multi-billion dollar market segment that is breathing down their neck. "NPRM"'s are typically a "this is what we are going to do" scenario, and comments don't generally make a huge difference in the implementation, but they are getting bombarded so we'll see. While I wouldn't relish seeing everyone's investment in equipment turned into paperweights overnight, I would like to see the equipment advance technologically in a gradual timeframe so everyone who wants to can adapt and make better/safer use of our airspace.

Here's yesterday's mission, after all the hoops were jumped through. Being a relative UAS neophyte, I watch my footage and think about all the different perspectives that I coulda, woulda, shoulda, captured, but I'll save those for the next time, and the time after that and..................

Obviously the day was beautiful, what you don't see is the south winds 15G25, but as Mike told me many times, the I2 is a beast and can handle a lot of wind, right again Mike!

15G25 – well to my untutored eye, that looks impressively smooth and stable. I know that your impatient with yourself, but your already getting perspectives that I don’t think are possible with a helicopter / crane / wire / whatever. Well done! Will the upcoming Canon R5 (or whatever it’s called) fit under your existing drone? Notwithstanding, I suppose the extra resolution is bound to show up any shortcomings – including stuff as yet unknown…… and so it goes!

HI Nick,

Thanks! No, the Inspire 2 is pretty sophisticated, retractable landing gear, nice sized sensor camera with 5.2K resolution and interchangeable lenses, so it's very capable, but it's not an airframe that you can hang another camera underneath it. You have to step up to a MOVI or similar platforms if you want to be able to utilize custom cameras like a RED or one of our still cameras. Aircraft in that category start around $19,000 and head north from there.

Ah, yet another part of my non knowledge (OK ignorance) is exposed. I just took a look at the DJI web site. I did a hasty retreat – no rear guard action required……. Drones will remain a closed door to me. It’s your rice bowl – enjoy!

Hi Nick, that's a common thought, many people think that you can hang different cameras on drones. I think it comes from the early DJI Phantoms hah came with a mount for GoPro's or they had a model with a rudimentary camera permanently installed. The Octo I posted will take our cameras or Sony or RED cinema cameras but there's a lot involved in hooking them up and having the various functions work properly. I'm gaining confidence but not quite ready to send a hundred grand into the sky with nothing but a couple of gimbals in my fingers.........

Just got a panic call from a good client, they need me in Laredo. Normally I would be raring to go, but I'm mulling it over at this point. Maybe it's time to pull my wetsuit off the hangar......

Hi Jan Arie,

We are supposed to get 2-3 inches of rain between now and the weekend. We're on high ground so not really worried about that. We'll have some river flooding because the ground is pretty saturated.

Really scratching my head about the Laredo assignment, it's a new hospital, not open, sanitized to CDC specs and I will be the only one in the building. Masks available, mandatory actually. Still, travel and overnight, food along the way, this might be the one time I back away .

Well you know, first your own safety and that of your family.
But I known you long enough that that would be no factor

Please remember that we all do not have spare parts available, specially that we all (or most) are 40+

Too many people are asking the wrong question. It's not "What are my chances of getting it?" We should be asking "How will I feel if I bring it home and give it to my wife, or child, or grandchild?"

Right you are Erich. I tossed and turned last night trying to reason this Laredo assignment out. A little more research this morning and a call to the City of Laredo cleared up any doubt I might have had. The City was very nice, but told me that photography is not an essential service and Laredo officers have been instructed to levy $1,000 fines and arrest anyone who cannot document that they are on an essential mission. I don't want to be in a Laredo jail on a good day.............

While I completely agree with whatever needs to be done, does anyone wonder why the left is releasing hardened criminals from jail because of this, then arresting average citizens? Just add it to the list of oxymorons, and just plain morons that surround us daily.
