My son JR just stopped by with an early Christmas present for me, a LaRue Tactical LT-15, custom built and ceracoated. Time to drop by Cabela's and head to the range
That is a nice present. I know that you will enjoy it!

Beautiful Nick! Man, you know me too well Sheila and I were just discussing that very subject. Odd, my flying/photography buddy seems to vanish (along with every other family member) when work is on the horizon. This will be James III's first Christmas where he is aware enough to take it all in so the process will begin this weekend. James is welded to my leg these days (no complaints!!) so I'm confident he will want to "help" me, my guess is that won't add more than 100% to the total task.. I bought a beautiful 12' tree right after Christmas last year, the discussion this morning, as I nursed my aching shoulders, feet and lower back, centered around the tree and how to decorate it.
Today I am sitting at my desk editing and working on several video post processing projects, my plan is to convalesce, for this day anyway, before the onslaught. I'm so energized and excited from the last three days that I can probably draw from that pool for this early decorating effort.
I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the dozens of business cards that I handed out this week and got fired up all over again. How often is one immersed with 100 people of that caliber, all of whom are heavily dependent on imagery to move their efforts forward? You can't buy that kind of exposure, especially in a entrepreneurial environment where you are the chosen creative person and there aren't dozens of other photographer/cinematographer types clamoring for their attention. See, I'm all fired up again, or still..............Show more →
12’ you say? Well, around here that’s nose bleed territory. Next things you need will be speed jeans and oxygen.
BTW, Thea and I both want to see JRW III mashing the buttons on the cherry picker control box. You know – the elevator platform your getting in to top out the Christmas tree.

Thanks Joe,
He loves to build custom firearms and he has his FFL so he can do some really trick stuff. I'm not sure what I will do with this one because I don't hunt, but I'm sure it will be fun to shoot occasionally. I'm going to Cabela's today to pick up some ammo, JR says it's fairly reasonable, not one of those $1 a shell deals.........
Funny that you mention lifts, James III has seen them here and there and is fascinated by all manner of construction equipment. The words, "Papa will teach you how to operate one of those someday" are often spoken. When our kids were little I had the entire Caterpillar inventory at my fingertips so we had a lot of fun moving dirt, pushing over trees and digging trenches. That was a great job, and I sold a bunch of yellow iron in 11.5 years, but the "job" I have had for the past 38 years has been the very best. The retirement plan is a little weak though.........................
Hope everyone is having a great weekend! The weather outside, although a little nippy is gorgeous today, might be time for a trip to DFW Airport this afternoon.
Enjoy this one from my recent trip to Dekalb Peachtree Airport.
Bell Helicopter estimates this will be operational by 2025.............. the vehicle will be a turbine/battery powered "Hybrid". Bell is negotiating with a new vendor for the turbine portion.
I have never seen a fighter take off with the speed brakes open, well, not on purpose. Randy had them open as he flew alongside the cars he was racing. I found it interesting how engineers found places to locate the speed brakes. Sometimes it looks like an afterthought. Kinda like the F-102 where they had problems getting it to fly past Mach 1, then after achieving that requirement someone asked about slowing it down. I can hear the engineer, make up your mind, do you want to go fast or slow?
Jim,
Sounds like an amazing weekend!
I was out at the range yesterday, shooting with a young Lockheed software engineer, just the snippets of conversation we had about the F-35 blew me away...and that's the stuff he could talk about.
LaRue Tactical....that's high cotton in the AR world...and as a Christmas gift! wow!
Have fun with that tool!

Last night's sunset from the side of the road.
Just beautiful!
Happy Thanksgiving week Zane! Wishing you a Blessed Thanksgiving with your family. Incredible sunset image, thanks for sharing it! What range did you go to? We have a new one about to open around the corner from my house, "Texas Legends". This is a brand new, state of the art facility and my plan is to get an annual membership as soon as the doors open. I have a couple of friends with fairly large properties in East Texas and Southeastern Oklahoma, I'm thinking one of those might be a good place to break in the LaRue. Yes, JR is generous to a fault. thinks nothing of surprising me with a gift like this. The custom guns he builds are really beautiful pieces of work. I don't have the expertise to appreciate some of the higher end mods he does on them but the quality is obviously there. He built me a Ruger 10-22 a few years ago that was all decked out and lots of fun to plink with.
There have been rumors about this for a year or so, but from what I'm hearing from the inside it looks like this is the route Canon is going to take. I gotta say, I'm all in on a 75MP mirrorless 5DSR sequel, what beast that will be. I still get tempted to outfit a digital medium format kit, but the more technology in the 35mm advances, the less appealing it is. My Ronin S is just sitting here all charged up and ready to go, but with a 1DXII mounted on it it is a pretty heavy rig, not too nimble. Waiting for Canon to get their act together in the mirrorless world.
Jim, Thank you, driving home from the range last night, just had to stop and capture those clouds!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours as well!
Low key family plans for the holiday this year.
I shoot at the Arlington Sportsman's Club ( near Mansfield ) It's a old club, been there since the mid 60's. I've been a member for @ 15 years now, great bunch of people. You can rifle, pistol, skeet, trap, sporting clays, archery...you pick it. And the have some sort of fun, low pressure atmosphere match every weekend.
Yesterday we shot a version of the NRA's Americas Rifle Match. Shooting offhand, kneeling and prone at 25 to 50 yards using both left and right hand holds on the standing part...all under the clock with misses adding 5 seconds.
Good fun and a good exercise with the modern sporting rifle.
