Looks like the 1DX Series III is a "thing", 28.1mp with a maximum frame rate of 30fps and 6K video. I'm in for two! I'll know more next week but it looks like they'll be available in Spring of 2020. New Digic processor will add performance and improved autofocus, which I find difficult to believe is possible over the Series II.

Just got the mail from Canon in the mailbox, it will probably be out of my price range would be cool if the price of the old model would drop a bit, but knowing Canon that will not happen.
But again it would be a great piece to use...

Good Morning Everyone,

The formal announcement is here:

https://www.cinema5d.com/canon-eos-1dx-mark-iii-development-announced-4k-10-bit-422-and-raw-video-internally/

I'll be putting my lightly used Mark II bodies on the market as soon as I've thoroughly vetted the first Mark III. Normally I shoot the 5DSR's on daily assignments and the Mark II's come out when Chandler is shooting something fast along side. I kind of fell back in love with the crisp feel and lightening speed of the II's at AFW this year.

I'll be interested to see what the slight bump to 28.1mp and the new sensor design offers as far as quality. "Improved" AF along with the higher frame rates should make this camera a speedy subject legend, and probably the last mirrored iteration (
for better or worse).

I really put the Sony PXW Z280 to work at this year's air show, shot 10 hours of 4K footage at 59.97fps. The camera performs beautifully but AF is still somewhat unreliable. I think the heat waves cause it to hunt a bit in that application. Five years ago the use of auto focus was frowned upon in professional cinematography, probably for reasons of unreliability. You can have a great clip in progress and then AF wobbles virtually destroying it. I've kind of learned where and when it is effective for now, but I'm looking forward to future iterations that will improve on the reliability.

Man this stuff eats memory like it's nothing. I post processed a single six minute clip of The Blues prepping for flight last night and it ended up being 160GB. The quality is eye popping though.

On the subject of dazzling, has anyone strolled through their local BestBuy lately and been mesmerized by LG and Samsung's 8K flat screens? Just ridiculous! Larry, Chandler and I stopped in one by Alliance to pick up a USB to USB C dongle that I forgot at home and we were blown away by the imagery. I think I need a 75" for HQ.......................when the price drops 50%

Thankful I don't watch TV any more. My set needs the box to go from analog to digital, and the box died... and as little as I watch TV, I decided not to replace it, since it's been over 7 years since I've watched anything.

Well an 8K flat screen would only appeal to cutting edge cinematographers, and way out on that edge, because only RED captures 8K at the moment. So you spend $100,000 on your cinema gear, six or seven grand to watch your footage isn't a big deal

Lately I've started thinking about replacing my older 24-105 with either the 24-70II or the 24-70 f/4IS. I like the IS of the f/4 lens (and the price), but I keep thinking the faster lens would be better for my event photography. I do have the option of IS on the wide end with my 16-35.

Mark

Well, I decided to spring for the 24-70II f/2.8. Just missed a great local deal on B&S, but Canon has refurbs on sale for $1439 and I went for it last night. Hopefully I won't regret the lack of IS. I doubt it.

A couple of weeks ago I did some shooting at the USS Constitution. The New England posts of the Society of American Military Engineers kicked off the 100th anniversary celebration of the national organization with a nice event there. I hadn't been on the Constitution in probably 50 years, when I was in Cub Scouts.

This shot gives a good perspective on the rigging. When she was sailing with the fleet, she carried over 40 miles of rope rigging, weighing 67 tons. Now the rigging is mostly synthetic, which is more durable and weighs less, while still looking very realistic. From about 1833 to 1883, all rope used by the US Navy was made here at the Charlestown Navy Yard.

This is a portion of the gun deck. Each cannon weighs 6500 pounds. Constitution was built as a 44-gun frigate, although she was usually fitted with 54 guns. During the War of 1812, she carried 30 24-lb long guns on the gun deck (there were more guns on the spar [top] deck).

Here is a view of a portion of the berth deck, just below the gun deck. Note the massive oak knees around the perimeter that are supporting the heavy gun deck above. Hard to believe that Constitution carried more then 450 men when going into battle.

This is Dry Dock 1, one of America's first two granite dry docks. The first ship to be serviced here was Constitution in 1833. She was last in here for an overhaul from 2015-2017.

Constitution is an active duty ship, so her commanding officer and crew are also active duty. There are 79 crew members. About half are straight out of boot camp, and half served elsewhere first. Special thanks to Commanding Officer Cmdr Nathaniel Shick and Executive Officer Cmdr John Bender, who joined us for photos wearing 19th century uniforms.

Captain's quarters, located at the stern end of the gun deck:

Looking forward to going back. Never had time to check out the museum or much of the visitors center.

Mark

Been working pretty much non stop so Chandler and I haven't gotten to fly much lately. This evening we launched out for an hour, he flew the majority of that and knocked the rust off. He has the magic touch and is a quick study with the stick. We milked all we could out of the daylight and ended with a dusk touchdown, priceless moments with my Guy..........................
