I attended the Kingsbury fly-in yesterday. They put a couple of planes in the WW1 hangar they are rebuilding on site there. Here's one.

I spent yesterday doing an assignment that required aerial, ground and some pretty intricate drone work. Our winds have been pretty ridiculous since my drone arrived, so I've gotten just a few hours of serious practice in. Yesterday was the acid test because I had to fly it farther and more precisely than any of my previous practice sessions. The trickiest portion required me to be standing in knee deep moving water, in a limestone creek bed, while I threaded the drone down the creek through the overhanging trees.

The first flight I had proximity warnings activated and, while they

Sorry to hear about the drone attack. The P4P will shut down one-handed and can be safely hand caught. Bring it to a stable hover just above your head, firmly grasp the vertical member of the landing gear, pull the throttle down with your thumb while holding the drone steady and it will shut down without eating you. It will not shut down if it is not held steady. This is the protection that keeps it from shutting off mid-air. Keep practicing👍👍

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Visiting in LA, so tomorrow I'm going to photograph the Space Shuttle Endeavour at the California Science Center.

Dear Mike,

Thanks for the continuing tutorial. I thought that was the case, but apparently I was not holding my mouth just right when this all took place because that did not work. In fact, the P4P powered up and tried to climb away from me, which didn't help my arm much. I figured it sensed a problem, and my proximity so it attempted to climb and right itself. Anyway, completely "pilot" error and lesson learned. The drone performed flawlessly on the second series later in the afternoon and my "carrier" launch and recovery was not only perfection, it was a lot of fun and I wish I had drone footage of the whole process.

Interesting side note, this all never would have happened if I wasn't operating with batteries at 45% capacity. Additional lesson learned yesterday was that my DJI four battery cradle charger will not charge my batteries beyond 45%. In an effort to charge one battery in the minimum time yesterday, I just plugged it into the normal charging receptacle and discovered that it charged to the full 100%.

All said and done, yesterday was a real confidence builder, fully realizing that it would have all gone perfectly less the pilot error on the first run. Something that I have noticed in all the Youtube examples that I've watched is, while the P4P is amazingly capable, it doesn't have the dynamic range I'm used to in bright/dark dappled light scenarios. I guess you can only expect so much from a camera that's smaller than a matchbox. Probably a good idea to avoid those contrasty situations if possible, which in this case just wasn't an option so it will be what it will be.

A North American Aviation T-28B Trojan, built in 1954. I love that deep sound from the Wright Cyclone radial engine.

Cheers,
Steve.

And a CA-18 MK.21 Mustang, built by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation in Melbourne Australia in 1948, with a 1720 hp Packard-Merlin engine.

Also from an airshow over the weekend.

Last one - a Flug Werk FW-190A8 replica. Not a rebuild, but still a very attractive aircraft.

Will post more from the airshow later in the week.

Cheers,
Steve.

Last minute ferry trip to Shreveport Thursday gave me the opportunity to catch to pre-game action at Barksdale Airshow. Had to come home Friday night which always feels weird leaving before the airshow even starts - seemed like it was gonna be a perfect weekend.

I doubt the proximity sensors were the issue. It is programmed to fly. If you attempt to lower it by hand prior to shut down it will try to overcome the loss of altitude. I've tested the sensors by flying close to objects including a Saguaro Cactus. It stops and holds position refusing to go closer and only responding to corrective measures.

A word of caution: when you get one of those DJI mandatory updates, recheck ALL of your parameters prior to flight. I've hadit go back to JPEgs only, had the sensors turned off and all my trim settings go back to default. Also I've pulled it out of the Jeep fifty miles from home only to receive the : critical update required! Don't get me wrong, I love my Phantom and am learning to adjust and accept it's idiosyncracies in stride. Also, don't trust the sensors around tree limbs and close to water or other surfaces that are hard to judge. Think back to your first night landing with the Cub.

As to the battery charger, you are a lot more high tech than me with the multi battery charger. I run three batteries and keep a Buff Mini for recharging on the fly. The camera can't compare to the high end Sonys Dynamic Range but will give you impressive results. Remember you are first and foremost a still photographer so have a wee bit more than a basic understanding of light. 🤓🤓

True enough Mike! Thanks! I was not under any illusion that I was flying my FS/7 with 14 stops of DR, but then again I am a long way from mustering the courage to launch that camera ! Although, after Saturday's success, I can see an Inspire 2/3/4? in my future once I get a few hundred hours of P4Pro time under my belt. These things will just keep improving and the 4 is light years better than that boat anchor P2 that JR spent so much money on......
