Celebrating my birthday today. I have started entering international photography Salons recently. Yesterday I was told that this image had been awarded the Open Monochrome Gold Medal (i.e. first place) at a Spanish salon (over 1400 entries). Best birthday present this year!!!

Congrats on your longevity and recognition. Both well deserved.

Does Apple Dumpling bridge still exist? It's right next to the site of the old Grange RNAS station (where the Gosport School of Special Flying was based in the Great War, and where the 'Gosport Tube' was invented). It was also right by 'Dead Man's Hollow' I used to walk there a lot with my father when I was about 10-12 yrs old!!
Hi Nial, The bridge exists - but I suspect is so modern, small, and featureless that it must be a replacement. Wes the one you remember wooden or a masonry arch? That whole area has completely changed over the years. There are no buildings left and the odd bit of groundwork is mostly covered by the vegetation that has reclaimed the area. Some of the roadways still exist and they form the basis of the paths that now crisscross what is now called Alver Valley Country Park.
View from the bridge looking in the other direction from the previous post....
Sony mad a global shutter announcement yesterday and Panasonic made their (much more ready for market) announcement this morning. All great news. Interestingly, 4K is fast becoming yesterday's news, 8K is now pretty mainstream. So, my dream machine at this point would be an 8K 32 Bit RED with a global shutter. Fast as the industry is morphing, that's probably less than 3 years away. I don't know what "K" resolution begins to eliminate the need for still photography, but 8K has to be getting there.

Excuse me, young Sir - I don't want my photography needs eliminated - thanks.
Seriously though, I'm sure that Sony will succeed in their quest to eliminate as many separate DSLR components as they can - usually by incorporating the functionality into the image sensor. So far they've managed to incorporate the reflex viewing system (focus screen, mirror, penta prism) into an EVF. Same with the metering / autofocus sensor. Oh, and IBIS eliminates the need to shim the sensor in it's mount. So if (when) they get the on sensor global shutter to the stage where it replaces the mechanical shutter there won't be much of the trad DSLR left!.....
It does look like it will be a phenomenal event, darn it. Any chance someone will record and post a least webcam size versions of the presentations in an ISAP archive on the website?
Happy Birthday Niall! And congrats on the nice birthday present!

Perish the thought that the medium that brought us all together could evaporate! You have to wonder though, izphone technology has virtually destroyed the lower end consumer photography market, and made a pretty good dent in the prosumer segment. Cinematic equipment with 8k sensors and global shutter technology will enter the market at 30 grand plus, so the serious amateur and most pros won’t jump at that technology for quite a while, if ever. That fact alone should assure a viable still camera market for some time to come, thankfully.
I’m surprised that Sony didn’t put a global shutter in their new Venice camera, cmos shutters have improved greatly, but they still have one geared or another of rolling shutter effect.
Amazing to watch the technology march on.

Sad to say, Chandler and I are not winging our way to San Diego this morning. Instead I’m at the ER trying to get a middle ear thing treated. Had a healthy case of vertigo in the shower at 4:15 that kind of brought me to my knees, literally. My guess is fluid or something. So a couple of disappointed boys here for sure. I can barely walk, and not straight , so hopping on the smoker to CA wasn’t a viable option.
Right you are Erich! Just left the Doc and it seems the diuretic component of my BP medicine needs to be dialed back by half. His diagnosis is a little fluid in my ears and a lot of dehydration. So, he thought running around the desert dragging camera gear wasn't the wisest plan for the near term...grrrr! #Bummed! On the bright side, if I had managed to get us on a flight out, I probably would have ended up in a lot worse shape....in El Centro California, which would not have been too good.
So, a change in prescriptions, a couple of liters of water a day and a few days of Davinci Resolve study, everything should be back to 110%. Good news is my BP is 120/68, silver lining there.
