I plan on being on the hill overlooking base for the flybys. Not sure if the B1's will be pulling up over the base or before....

I plan on doing the statics as well on Monday, then Tuesday, staking out a spot with a cooler of fruit and diet Mt Dew. Weather is forecast to be "Partly Sunny" so hopefully that means there will be patches of blue skies

Other than saying that 17 aircraft will be there, there's no listing. They did add more info about the B-1B flyby.

I hope they do more than one pass. Are you going to be at the static display on Monday? I'm planning on going, then on Tuesday find a good spot to stake out for the flyby's. Any ideas?

Erich

Last time I checked (never) you dont have to ask anybody to be off airport taking pics. As long as your not breaking other rules like illiegal parking, trespassing, etc.

Do you have a specific airport in mind?

Had to go back and find this.. working 60 hours a week lately and I'm groggy

Last year, without any prior authorization, I drove out to the airport, sat in a parking lot, and took lots of shots and never got bothered. I had a variety of cameras and lenses with me as well. That being said, I'm an older white woman who probably didn't fit any of the profiles they have for questioning people.

very nice aerial images as well as images in and the vicinity of airports.

if i were to hang around the local airport w/ camera and lenses, you can bet i will attract the prompt attention of law enforcements... :-)

what are the chances that an average enthusiasts like me can obtain authorization to capture aircraft takeoffs and landings at end of runways outside the airport grounds?

any suggestions on how and who i can contact to obtain such permission?

thank you in advance for the inputs.

Some of these shots, I was shooting right at the chain link fence, with my lens right up on the chain link. Nary a soul bothered me. Maybe they just ran my plates?

TNT.....

What Glenn says is right...

Some airports welcome photographers and any spot around the airfield as long as you are not parking illegally or interfering with traffic and such.

Some airports, such as DFW, have designated spots to park and watch and take photographs.

Some airports tolerate people with cameras more than others. Example: Arlington Airport leased their parking lot to a private company and that company ( the FBO ) doesn't like people taking photos of 'their ramp' and their customers airplanes.

The military base, like NAS Fort Worth, tolerate people taking photos of the aircraft from public property.

There are varying degrees of acceptance around airports....even then, some people ( that don't know any better) driving by and spotting a guy with a camera pointed at an airport will freak out and call 911.

It's just the world we live in....

But don't let that scare you off! If you are unsure you can always ask.....

Sorry TNT, I was in the midst of something or I would have given you more direction. What Glenn and Zane offered is about as accurate as it can be. First thing is to use common sense, of course, and not be where you absolutely know they don't want you. Unfortunately that is exactly where the best of us are drawn to Do some scouting first, if you can find a parking lot, a parking garage, a side road where you won't be too conspicuous, those generally work pretty well. If someone does approach you, be ready with a card, or your driver's license and treat them with the utmost respect, that goes a long way with most. Occasionally you will find someone, or they will find you, and nothing works because their only goal is to impress upon you that they are the ultimate authority, thankfully those people are in the minority. As the boys have mentioned, access varies greatly, LAX is really a pretty friendly spot, and you wouldn't guess that, my own home base is led by idiots that think it's O'Hare, and they'll shut you down. I'm in the process of getting a couple of people unemployed and that will fix the problem.

DFW, as Zane has mentioned, really likes you at Founders Plaza and nowhere else, but there are a couple of spots, with pretty good perspectives, where you can be off the beaten path and catch a few good shots. I don't know if it's hyper vigilant citizenry, or if the guys in the two towers are scanning the grounds with binocs, but it seems like someone will call you in pretty quickly, and a courteous officer will show up and direct you to Founders

It's a shame, and that's why, if I see folks along the fence at TKI, especially if they have kids, I'll go get them and bring them to the hangar for some fun. I did that with a young guy and his daughter years ago. This little sweetheart was waving at me as I taxied back in the Cub one evening, so I rolled over by the fence, shut down and asked if they'd like to come to the hangar for a Coke and some fun. We spent about an hour there, and on the golf cart riding all over the airport. Turned out the Dad was a photographer, super young guy, and he has since sent me a ton of aerial work, just like clockwork, nice when it turns out like that.

So, tread lightly, don't be afraid to be pre-emptive if you see an officer and introduce yourself, tell him what your all about, sometimes they'll take you to a cool spot, you never know. People are generally pretty nice, and they recognize and appreciate the same. There are some real jerks here and there, take it in stride, kick the dust off your heels and move on, they aren't worth the oxygen.

Now go shoot something and bring it back here for us!

Glenn, do you mind if I ask what altitude you and that jet were flying? And what focal length you were using? I'm guessing you were probably not more than 1500 AGL at the most... makes me wonder what the people on the ground were thinking!

Hey Ernie:

the cloud tops were 4000 so just over that. the shot with no clouds probably 2500. (1800 AGL). I dont like skimming the treetops that much. Since my 2nd D810 died last weekend, I only have 1 with a 24-70 on it now.

looks like the mirror stopped flipping up. (highly technical i know). Anybody ever replaced a mirror box on a late model DLSR?

Hey Bud,

I would seriously think about migrating to bodies that have integral grips, even if you have to give up the 36 MP sensor. The weight of the gyro on that one little battery grip screw is a spooky thing for sure. Maybe you need a pair of D5's. That'd be the photographic equivalent of The Lone Ranger's nickel plated Colts in your hands

You could send the 810's into NPS, doesn't cost anything to have them diagnose them for you. I know the guy who heads it up and I can give him a call ahead of your gear. I should send you a 5DSR, it would ruin you, but you'd have the same single screw dynamic operating there too. Lets' brainstorm this when we get together next week.

Have a great Easter Weekend! Hugs to the girls.

Well holy smokes Jim. I think I need to rejoin ISAP. Especially if Larry will let me bring my 4x5 to the symposium

Hopefully, you'll let me buy you dinner one evening during the week.

EDIT for TOPP: A platinum and palladium print made from a digital negative. I took this photo last year at the Pima Air & Space Museum before they finished the restoration of the Mystere.

Jeff.. you would be welcome back with your 4x5 and we would enjoy having you share your images and work within ISnAP for the membership and readers. And to the rest of MA2A readers and members come join us next year in Tucson. Yes, you will need to become members of ISAP.

This ISAP symposium goal is to bring back photographers so that they can to get together, be inspired, learn, network, and socialize with each other.

As we confirm speakers and activities, Jim will update and share our plans with this group. So check out our website over the next few months along with ISnAP.

If any question ask Jim or feel free to email me at [email protected]

PS, Jeff I still have my 4x5 and film along with over 30 years of images shot with this and other cameras I owned.
You have been doing some great work with your b/w images along with your 4x5 images you have shared here
on MA2A.

Hey Larry:

Just a few moments ago, I tried to join ISAP and there was some type of glitch. I'm sure the error is on my end. You know, old man versus new iMac. Anyhow, before I double my error, please have your membership person contact me and let me know if the information got through or if I need to retry. The email you might still have on file will work fine. If that is gone from your records, I can PM you my new email.

Looking forward to rejoining the ranks. Thanks.

Have you thought about a monthly membership subscription similar to how Adobe to Photoshop CC rather than the 1 off payment?

thank you nightowl cat, glenn, zane and jim for advices and inputs.

glen, i don't have a particular airport in mind. but i have yet to approach any major airports given my numerous encountered with skittish security at smaller outlier airfield and airbases.

i have learned to request permission or inform the local authorities in advance of my intentions so they can ignore incoming calls from concerns passerby.

for major airports, i'm not sure of the appropriate authority to contact for permission. is it the local airport, local security, or the local tsa directors?

i'm very surprised to hear that lax and dwf are photographer-friendly. perhaps they are used to having the congregation of photographers in public areas.

for me, just taking photos at the top of a bridge spanning a shipping channel is enough to alert the local authority. the initial question after i am instructed to step back from the railingis: "were you planning to jump?" :-)
