thank you for the welcome jim, but no responses so far.
perhaps i am not asking the right questions. :-)
Sorry TNT, I was in the midst of something or I would have given you more direction. What Glenn and Zane offered is about as accurate as it can be. First thing is to use common sense, of course, and not be where you absolutely know they don't want you. Unfortunately that is exactly where the best of us are drawn to Do some scouting first, if you can find a parking lot, a parking garage, a side road where you won't be too conspicuous, those generally work pretty well. If someone does approach you, be ready with a card, or your driver's license and treat them with the utmost respect, that goes a long way with most. Occasionally you will find someone, or they will find you, and nothing works because their only goal is to impress upon you that they are the ultimate authority, thankfully those people are in the minority. As the boys have mentioned, access varies greatly, LAX is really a pretty friendly spot, and you wouldn't guess that, my own home base is led by idiots that think it's O'Hare, and they'll shut you down. I'm in the process of getting a couple of people unemployed and that will fix the problem.
DFW, as Zane has mentioned, really likes you at Founders Plaza and nowhere else, but there are a couple of spots, with pretty good perspectives, where you can be off the beaten path and catch a few good shots. I don't know if it's hyper vigilant citizenry, or if the guys in the two towers are scanning the grounds with binocs, but it seems like someone will call you in pretty quickly, and a courteous officer will show up and direct you to Founders
It's a shame, and that's why, if I see folks along the fence at TKI, especially if they have kids, I'll go get them and bring them to the hangar for some fun. I did that with a young guy and his daughter years ago. This little sweetheart was waving at me as I taxied back in the Cub one evening, so I rolled over by the fence, shut down and asked if they'd like to come to the hangar for a Coke and some fun. We spent about an hour there, and on the golf cart riding all over the airport. Turned out the Dad was a photographer, super young guy, and he has since sent me a ton of aerial work, just like clockwork, nice when it turns out like that.
So, tread lightly, don't be afraid to be pre-emptive if you see an officer and introduce yourself, tell him what your all about, sometimes they'll take you to a cool spot, you never know. People are generally pretty nice, and they recognize and appreciate the same. There are some real jerks here and there, take it in stride, kick the dust off your heels and move on, they aren't worth the oxygen.
Now go shoot something and bring it back here for us!
