Got home from "Defenders of Liberty" late last night. I'm in the process of downloading and backing up 4TB of imagery. Weather was some of the most challenging I've encountered, but a great time was had by all in spite of it. Chandler and I managed a few keepers.........

Kevin, the pollen here is awful this year. I don't have allergies and I am all congested. I am using the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 and loving it. Super sharp!

I thought I didn't have allergies but this Spring is terrible!!!!
I can't breathe in the morning through my nose. I look like a fish until my meds kick in.

If you all have some spare time watch this.
Some cool photos and video from the Sidewinder low level route.
Jan,
I watched these last night on my 72" Samsung Frame TV and they were outstanding! If you stand in front of the screen you can get motion sickness!!
Well, the air show was so challenging this Weeknd that I did not have time to put the RF 2X through it's paces. I just spent a few hours playing with it and, based upon that, I am cautiously optimistic about its potential.......... I'm going to shoot with the RF1200/8 in a few weeks, but I'm not sure that it could be much sharper than this combo, very pleasantly surprised.
Speaking of the Blue Jay image, pretty good example of the AF accuracy of the R5II. My previous Canon bodies would have been a bit confused by the myriad of branches in that composition, but the eye tracking AF on the II was right on target.

Now that is razor sharp Jim! Vibrant, detailed, texture..."winner winner chicken dinner"!

Glad to see he is wearing a hat Jim. I am predisposed to skin cancer and a hat is a MUST!!!! My bald head looks like a checkerboard from removals.
Fine looking young man Jim! Tell my buddy I said "Heh"!

Unless the RF1200/8 is some kind of magical, I cannot imagine investing that amount of money when the RF2X is as good as it appears. Shooting with a 1200mm handheld, as Douglas eluded, is no small feat. Just locating the subject is the first challenge. I do think that having the ability to shoot with a 1200mm optic, and having it be this quality, is a tool that will produce some epic imagery in the right circumstances. The tools that we have at our fingertips these days is really quite amazing, now they just need to get me the 100mp sensor that they've been promising for a decade..............

I was fully prepared to send it back to B&H, but it seems to be the real deal. I’m going to shoot with the 1200, but it will have to be beyond spectacular at this point.
Jim,
it's nice to hear that they seemed to have dialed this in. I at one point back in the day had the poor man's 600, meaning 300 2.8 + 2x TC, which was good, but I don't think the 2x combo really worked well with the longer lenses. I certainly feel that way about the EF 2x III with my now ancient 500 f/4.
Look forward to your thoughts on the 1200...
