I hear you Dan, my studies have indicated that they are allergic to lead..................... JIII asks me to show them leniency so we have scaled back the assault to pounding on the window, which makes them laugh at us.
What do you do at the end of two grueling days that began at 4:30am ......................you go shoot airplanes in the cold rain of course...................
Jim,
The photo's in the rain are just awesome, the atmosphere just adds so much to the mood. Thanks for sharing.

Sad / Bad Day in DC. Prayers to the families. Clara said this is might be the first commercial aviation accident in 16 yrs. Sad to see the record come to a close.
Dan
Just horrible Dan. My nephew has spent a lot of time training in the DC airspace, he called me right after it happened and had a lot of insight into the accident, some that the media has yet to bring up, if they know it. The first thing he told me was that the crew of the Blackhawk were off their altitude by 100' and that is not tolerated in the rigorous DC airspace. One wonders why that was, and why ATC wasn't all over them about it long before the impact.
Jim,
In one report that I saw the military air traffic is on military frequencies and maintain contact with ATC through that. And civilian traffic is on another frequency requiring ATC to switch back and forth for communication. Not the most efficient, and may have played into the accident. This particular report said that the ATC had instructed the Blackhawk to watch for commercial aircraft and go "behind" it. And 3 or 4 seconds later they had met.
I was unaware they were off their required altitude but I'm sure that is a big issue as well. All in all, very sad day. My cousin is Deputy Director at Andrews, said they sent plenty of search and rescue resources to help out. That is how I learned it was Army, was concerned it may have been a their assets involved since they have mission to support "dignitaries"
Well, the new Prez was sure full of himself today at his press conference about it, and really he should have shut his mouth. Seemed to call the ATC intelligence in to question, and that should never be tolerated.

They did, bad move in my opinion, but then so was pulling out of Oshkosh and letting the "Canon House" go. Canon Japan and Canon NY both have their own way of doing things and a lot of it doesn't seem really bright, but I love my Canon folks and the gear.
I dipped my toe in Canon water again. Based on what could find on the net, the Canon R5 is the best high resolution body for infrared conversion. High resolution Sony and Nikon show bad banding. Received my IR converted R5 yesterday, took it to Gettysburg for a quick spin today.

Oooh that's nice, Douglas. Beautiful images. Look forward to seeing much more of this from you!

It is sad and disappointing when the loss of life from an accident becomes politicized, irrespective of who is politicizing it. I find this most disrespectful to those who lost their lives and those who are grieving.
Indeed Gero. The FAA's big DEI statement was virtue signaling at it's absolute worst, but today was not the day to drag all that out. These families need answers and support.

Jim..was your nephew's aviation unit involved here in DC??
I hope not! Looks like the helo was fling too high. But I will await the NTSB/FAA conclusion from the "black boxes".
PLEASE members do not believe some of the crap the "lame stream media" is putting out on the military carelessness via DEI, not just a plain pilot error here!
I have dealt with "night vision goggles" they obscure your periperphial vision and if you remove them from your eyes, that takes milliseconds.....trying to "2nd guess" what happened is NOT fair to the aviators at this time. Itwas a "training mission" that failed for some reason!

Last year, for the first time ever, the crows found out my backyard's pears and persimmons were delicious, they helped themselves with all the fruit before we could pick one. This year I may feed them some lead....

Thank you all gentlemen! I need some bright light and clouds to make the IR pix pop! Winter is not the best time to shoot IR here due to the lack of green vegetation.
Great shot of the moon, Gero! I have seen some amazing pictures of the Milky Way but I have never tried it.
Sony is coming out with a 400-800mm F6.3-F8 in few weeks, very few details are available now. If it's as sharp as the 200-600, I will grab one for airshows so I don't need to resort to using the 600mm F4+1.4TC to get longer reach. F8 is a bit too dim but for typical airshow hours it's probably manageable.
Horrible collision over the Potomac... Last week I went to take pictures of the frozen part of the Chesapeake Bay near Baltimore, and took a few shots of the formerly Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed 10 months ago after being hit by a cargo ship.
