Hi Bill,
Yes, it seems that Canon planned ahead this time, good for them! Today wasn't the best day to wring out a new camera, 107 degrees with a feels like 115, but we don't let little things like that deter us Obviously the atmospherics presented a bit of a challenge. Very early impressions, anyone familiar with the R5/R5c will glide right into this camera. The II boots up instantly and changes from still to video in a blink. The viewfinder is larger, but I find it to be slightly softer than the predecessors, no matter how I tweak the diopter adjustment. I set all my usual parameters in the menu this morning, even programmed the retinal recognition feature, but I didn't use that today. The shutter is wonderful, digital is stupid fast and very quiet, one wouldn't know that it was capturing in a noisy environment, except for the frame count blazing. I used the back button Af at first, habit, then realized that holding the shutter button down half way does exactly the same thing. Back button kind of cements focus to a certain point, but the shutter button seems to do tracking very accurately, so I stuck with that, something that will take some time to refine.
The back illuminated stacked sensor seems to be sharper, don't know if that is subliminal or reality, some more side by side testing will help, but so far the imagery looks very nice. No subject matter that would test out the lack of black out today, but I have no reason to doubt that it is gone. "Thunder Over The Heartland" will really be the first time I'll have the opportunity to explore it corner to corner, but I'm happy so far. B&H is sending me a vented battery grip on Thursday, ACnon goofed up the order locally. I just have a hard time shooting these mirrorless bodies with no grip, they feel like toy cameras after all the years of shooting 1D bodies. Oh, I did see one bar on the temp warning icon this morning, never got worse, ambient was 100 and I was in direct sunlight. Didn't shoot any video today. When you think back a few years when we were paying $6995.00 for bodies that did a whole lot less than this one, at $4299.00 it's a bargain. More as I know more.
