After an excruciating span of time with no information about Canon's new products, the flood gates are opening:
My intuition seems to be correct, the R1 looks very cool, but not for me personally. The R5II has a pleathora of new features that make a wonderful tool even better. One reviewer said that the II is a highly polished up version of the R5 and I think that accurately describes it. The ability to shoot 8K with new internal batteries is just one of the features, and eye controlled focus that exceeds the performance of the R3 is another.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on my II and running it through the traps. My guess is that I'll sell my R5 and add a second II. right be so good that I give buying the C400 a second thought, we'll see. Given the increased processing power the cooling grip seems like a no brainer. Kind of seems like the R5II is the real "flagship" of the Canon line up, but I'm sure that for some, the R1 will be an incredible tool. ...Show more →
Hi Jim,
I was just looking at the features of both cameras at the B&H site and they both have this upscaling feature, which I believe is new. I'd be interested in your take on that once you receive your R5 II and whether it actually works with respect to IQ you could sell a client. This may make the R1 more attractive to those disappointed by the lower MP count of that camera.

Thanks Douglas. Yes the R5II is nicely priced and will save me money with just adapters for my Canon lenses.
Looking forward to your air show and redwoods photography. Are you home yet? Hope not! It is MISERABLE here!
Thanks!
Dan
Hi Dan, I am at LAX waiting for my red eye fight back to Maryland. I didn't get to go up to Redwood NP as planned, just didn't have enough time. Did go up to Humbolt (?) State Park, they got some redwood there too. I think my landscape shooting this trip was mostly a bust due to the weather.

Good Morning Gerov,
I saw that feature, like you, I'm a bit skeptical but we'll see. They have had the one where you can increase the size of the file on a stationary image (never tried it), but this is something new. I'll let you know my impression one I get my hands on it.
I drove to Mono Lake near Yosemite on Sunday night after the show in Sacramento, got there at 3:00AM , woke up in my car at 5:00 to shoot the sunrise. The trail I took ended very far away from the tufa, I didn't see the typical view of the tufa formations. I looked at google map today and realized I pulled into the wrong parking lot along the lake, which is 12 miles from the parking lot where I should have been.
Anyway, here are some infrared pix from my recent quick stop.

Douglas, those look like they were inspired by Ansel Adams himself. Wonderful.
Thank you very much, Ray! Yosemite looks very nice in B&W, IMHO.

Very nice Douglas! I'd be interested to understand how you processed the IR conversions.
Gero
Thank you Gero! I had a 850nm IR conversion done to my camera, the files come out black and white already, I just need to make some adjustments like contrast, shadow, highlight, dehazing...I know some folks have different IR filters or different conversion, then play around with color channels. I don't have the Photoshop skill to mess around with the channel stuff. I prefer the B&W look anyway, so I had a 850nm conversion done. I really enjoy shooting the IR camera, even though I don't get to use it often.

And those worried about the sky, first one with blue sky was last night, no edit.
The rest were today at 10:00 am, dull, a little smoky and HOT yukky skies so had to edit those.
Looks like my R5II will be ready to pick up August 20th, just got confirmation. I could have used the C400 today, but the R5C did a great job. Left home at 4:30 this morning to go pick Chandler up for a 777 assignment. We documented the largest cargo door installation in history, pretty impressive process. I was in three spots at once with video and stills and Chandler roamed the hangar finding unique still compositions as they raised and installed the new door. Just as soon as my client does their media blast, I'll share the images with you guys.
I think someone here asked me about the AI features in the R5II. My inside sources are telling me that they are garbage and not to even consider them. The only one that I would consider is the upres feature which turns a JPEG (never, ever shoot JPEGS anyway), into a 180 MP file. Doesn't work in RAW but it doesn't matter because the output is trash. Many other wonderful polished up capabilities, but the AI stuff is nothing more than iPhone level gimmickry.

Bill this was "thee" training aircraft for Airborne training and Ranger manuevers. JUmped out many of these "bad boys" in 6 years!
It was also the major resupply aircraft at Khe Sanh and saved my(1st CavDiv) six and those Marines "sixes" with low altitude, pallet drops..the C123 was also there but the "Herc" did the job and did it well! It became the mascot of "Operation Niagra".
