My Toyota service tech is telling me that the turbo 4cylinder is anemic(go figure) and the life span is going to be pitiful. I’ve got 170,000 on mine and I’m aiming for 500,000, then James wants it…….🤣
It depends on what you want that 4 cyl. turbo to do Jim. The towing specs are reasonable, plenty of hp and torque and tows 6000 lbs. Of course, I bet you are filling the tank with 90+ octane.
If you are willing to spend $100k, and ride in style, check out the Porsche Cayenne. You get a 6 cyl engine producing 348 hp and 368 lb. ft. of torque and tows up to 7716 lbs. and you can add another 220 lbs on the roof. If you can avoid the TxDOT Troupers you can cruise at 154 mph on your West Texas trips.
My buddy has one he used to tow his 911 "Wide One" to the track. His wife drives it as her daily driver the Cayenne, not the Wide One). But all his vehicles are Porches.
Amazingly, many of the major automakers are going to the small liter turbo charged engines. I guess they are reflecting the F1 technological advances. The F1 engine is about 1.6 liters, is turbo charged with dual electronic boost. Newer commercial engines are getting an electronic hybrid design to compensate for the turbo lag when you take the accelerator to the floor. I often remember my 1955 Chevy with 265 cu. in. V8 putting out 160 hp. We went back to those specs in the '80s when unleaded fuels first came out, but in the 21st century, the Europeans are really kicking up the technology.

Right you are Douglas! I have the perfect set up though.......they pay me.............
That's why I said when I grow up, I want to be like Jim!..
Grey colored F-16s can be pretty photogenic too if they are loaded with missiles and seen at the right angles, IMHO. I was told the tiger paint scheme on the last F-16 has never been changed since the jet was transferred from Norway to Denmark in 2008. I am not sure what the significance is but the Europeans folks on the photoship seemed to be very excited to see it.

Schucks Jim, an old Jeep is much better suited to hauling camera gear. My old JK has 367,000 miles on original engine and sports a supercharger. A new Rubicon w/392 is beautiful and stickers @ $100K. It resides on the dealer’s showroom floor and makes me feel better when I swing by for parts to keep my baby running.

Jan Arie, the stickers are around $90,000, and surprisingly, the epa mileage estimate on the window is 20 average. I guess percentage wise that’s a considerable jump, but mine ranges from 13-18 , given what you would give up with the 4 banger, that’s not a huge difference. They asked me if I’d like to drive one , I’m not even tempted.
I guess if something happened to mine I’d go to the Lexus , but I don’t want to. I love mine, and as long as it holds up, I’m sticking with it. Styling is personal prey, but I don’t even like the looks. The interior seems much smaller than mine. There are companies here in the US that will completely refurbish a Landcruiser , new leather, carpet, drive train, the works. ...Show more →
Yeah, as long as I can I'm holding on to my 2003 4Runner. It's the rare breed with the 4.7L V8 and full time four wheel drive. My FJ Cruiser has the 4L V6 in it. I don't need a hyper stressed out 4 banger. I had a turbo charged 1.8L four banger once and it was a maintenance nightmare. It just kept wearing out parts.

I have been with Toyota since 1979..pickups, 4Runner...250k on my 1988 Toyota p/up and donated it and it was sold for another 150K!
Jim, last year I rented a Toyota 4 Runner to drive to Shrevport where we met and Texas. I hated this thing so much. It drove like a whale, very floaty, the handling was one of the worst I ever experienced. I like SUVs that handle more like a fine car.

My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends
So, oh, Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?

LMAO Dan......Traded in my Dodge Diesel and got a Dodge Hemi not long ago-
I wanna haul stuff and go fast...
I was a Toyota guy since 1975 when I bought my first new car, a 1975 Corrolla. In 2012 I bought a Highlander. After about 5 years I had nothing but problems. Some were with the vehicle, many more with the dealers, we have two in in our area and I have quit using them. I sold the Highlander for scrap because I didn't want to pass on a bad car to someone else, and I was happy when it was gone. I continue to drive my 2001 Tundra with 200k miles, but I am doing the maintenance, those Toyota mechanics can kiss my grits, they aren't going to mess it up.
A couple of years ago after I got fed up trying to schedule an oil change on the Highlander, I just did it myself. I was shocked to find several of the dam covers missing under the engine. They were not torn off, the screws were missing. When I opened the hood to change the air filter I found two vacuum hoses laying in the windscreen vent below the wipers and one of the fasteners on the filter cover missing. On one occasion I took it in for an oil change and tire rotation before I replaced my brakes. When I got home to remove the wheels, I couldn't remove any of the lug nuts because they had been over torqued; I even tried to remove them with a 2 foot cheater bar. I took it back to Toyota and the service manager assured me they were not over torqued because they have calibrated tools for that. I handed him the lug wrench and told him to prove me wrong.
There were several other things that happened that have caused me to reject buying a Lexus because it is a Toyota product. Toyota was at the top of my list, heck, they were the only brand I bought after 1989. Sure, I knew their steering, brakes, wipers and noise reduction weren't the best, but I never had to work on them when I maintained the vehicle per the stated requirements. That Toyota Highlander and their service departments have chased me away.
Did a groundbreaking this morning south of Dallas and secured several new clients in the process. Last week one of the largest architectural and design firms in the country asked me to revamp all their imaging…..I’m not changing my socks 🤣
Prior to my 2013 Sienna, I did ALL mtce and oil changes myself.
Since then I stopped.
I do NOT like the Toyota Service in my area or even near DC. The lie and cheat! A Service Advisor brought out a cabin air filter and said it was mine and it looked like 50 years of gunk trapped in it. I asked to see the glove box(behind it is the cabin AF)....he took me over to the wrong vehicle!!! It was a ruse!!!!
I fear "the reaper" everytime I go in for service. They are NOT trustworthy around here.
Not saying ALL Mfg are but I have NOT experienced a truthful one in over 50 years.
